  1. Inuit “human beings” Inuksuk A stone marker that acts in the place of a human being. An inuksuk is therefore a man made landmark that survives the weather and communicates important navigation information. The meaning of an inuksuk depends on the intent of the person who builds it.

  2. Inunnguaq (like a person) Finding an inunnguaq is a moment of great joy because it signifies that a traveler has found food, shelter and friendship. It is an open arms welcome in an landscape that is most often covered by snow where environmental landmarks are hard to establish.

  3. Aulaqut (makes things run away) A aulaqut is a hunting inuksuk. Threats of hair are attached to these inuksuit, and when the wind blows the hair makes them look like people. These inuksuit are placed in a row along the valley. When the hunters provoke a stampede of caribou, the herd is directed into a hunting ground by the aulaqut. Hunters line up and target only the last animal on the herd as they stampeding caribou approach their location. This ensures that the rest of the hunters also get a target. Hunters will take only what is necessary for their survival and believe that the caribou give themselves as a gift to them.

  4. Niugvaliruluit (that has legs) A niugvaliruluit is a navigation inuksuk. A traveler has to look through the whole and locate the next inuksuk at a distance. Following one after the other leads to a destination.

  5. Nikisuittuq (north star) In the Artic, some winter days can be total darkness. The nikisuittuq points at the North Star and it is very useful for navigation through the stars in a dark night.

  6. Tupjakangaut (footprints of game) A tupjakangaut is a hunting inuksuk. This inuksuk points at a good place to hunt caribou. The best place to hunt caribou is an area where caribou come to feed on moss and small grasses. The best caribou hunting season starts in the Fall.

  7. Nakkatait (things that fell into the water) A nakkatait indicates where fish can be found. This inuksuk is found close to a fishing area. The distance from the shore to the inuksuk indicates how far into the water fish are found.
