  2. Informational Page • The year 1923 marked the first intercollegiate competition including a women's team from Western Michigan. • In 1925 the Women’s tennis team played matches against several colleges. The Bronco’s defeated teams from Albion College, Detroit City College and Michigan State College. • For nearly three decades, Intercollegiate competition for women was banned throughout the U.S. This resulted from many people being in favor of noncompetitive "Play Day" athletic events. This prohibition greatly hindered the development of U.S. female athletes. • It was not until the 1950’s when women began competing again. From this point on, several women’s sports teams at WMU won many state and regional titles. • In 1978, the Mid-American Conference first incorporated women's sports. • Throughout the 1980s, the Bronco’s dominated the MAC in women's sports. • Currently, Western Michigan University sponsors 10 women’s varsity sports teams, which includes about 200 student-athletes each year. http://www.wmich.edu/wmu/women/
