Evaluate your choices. • 5. Make your decision. • 6. Plan how you will reach your goal.

  6. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Assessing Yourself The first step in your career search is to conduct a self-assessment. You can begin to do this by assessing your: • personality • learning style • work environment • relationship preferences • values • lifestyle goals • interests • skills and aptitudes

  7. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Values Values are beliefs that guide the way people live. When you have clear values, you know what you want out of life. You can then choose a career that is suited to your values.

  8. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Your Lifestyle Goals • The word lifestyle refers to the way you spend your time, energy, and money. Your career has a great effect on your lifestyle. If attaining a certain lifestyle is important to you, then choosing a career that will allow you to reach your lifestyle goal is essential.

  9. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Your Interests • You will probably spend 30 to 40 years working, so you will want to choose work that interests you. To evaluate your interests: • Write down the things you like to do, including leisure activities, school activities, favorite classes, sports, and social activities. • Take a career interest survey.

  10. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Your Skills and Aptitudes • Your personality is the combination of all of the unique qualities that make you who you are. Understanding your personality characteristics will help you to determine what types of work situations will best suit you. To assess your personality, think of ways you would describe yourself.

  11. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Your Work Environment • Your work environment refers to where you work—the place and the working conditions. Working conditions include sights, sounds, and smells. Start thinking now about our preference for working conditions.

  12. SECTION 37.1 Important Career Decisions Your Relationship Preferences All jobs require working with data, people, or things—alone or in some combination.
