  2. What is Water? • Binary compound that is necessary for the life • Occurs as a liquid at room temperature • Most abundant liquid on earth • Solid- 0 degrees centigrade or lower • Gas- 100 degrees centigrade or higher • Contains 2 atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen

  3. Functions of Water • Regulates body temperature • Natural lubricant for joints • Moves nutrients around body • Helps remove waste • Helps with digestion • Promotes healthy skin

  4. Water Requirements • Average size horse drinks 10-12 gallons of water a day • Nursing mares: 20-25 gallons of water daily • 1 gallon of water per 100 pounds of body weight

  5. Mineral Intake • Solvent for nutrients • Delivers nutrients to cells • Helps eliminate waste products from cells

  6. Methods of watering horses • Automatic waterers • Large buckets • Refill buckets throughout the day with fresh water • Clean bucket or waterer to make sure it is clean

  7. Where is water digested? • The stomach of an adult horse holds approximately two gallons • Allows it to hold large amounts of food and water • Absorbed through the walls of the small intestine • Small colon reclaims excess moisture

  8. Where is water excreted? • Sweat • Urination

  9. Signs of dehydration • Couple ways to tell if horse is dehydrated • pull out a pinch of skin on the horses neck or shoulder. The longer the skin is up the more dehydrated your horse is. • Check his gums, if his gums look dark red he is dehydrated • Check your horses eyes. If his eyes are dulled or glazed over he is dehydrated.

  10. Signs of over hydration • Couple of ways to tell if horse is over hydrated • Heart failure • Kidney Disorder • if the body produces to much anti diuretic hormone
