  1. eSortie C2C Rob Cilla, C3C Nate Hart, Dr. Pargas, Lt. Col Christman (Ret.) CSURF 2011 Operation eSortie aims to mainly be used aboard USAF C-17 aircraft, however this is not to say it could not easily be adapted to different airframes. The main user of eSortie will be the C-17 Aircraft Commander (ACC). Prior to departing, Aircraft Commanders will be able to select a pilot from their roster, and view which requirements have been completed and which requirements still need to be completed. This will be done by means of wireless internet on the ground. The AC will create a new sortie and check in which pilots will be on the flight. eSortie will then load all of their flight information to a local database on the iPad. Throughout the flight the ACC will be able to cycle through pilots on the flight and check off requirements as they are completed. The ACC will also be able to update flight hours throughout sortie, as these go towards pilot requirements. All of these updates are written to a local database on the iPad. After landing, as part of their post-flight responsibilities, the aircraft commander will submit the sortie using wireless internet, which will reconcile the most recent flight data with the records stored in an online database. This will update all of the pilot’s flight data for future use. . Abstract eSortie aims to have a wide range of benefits for C-17 Pilots in the US Air Force. It aims to make many of the tasks that C-17 Pilots must complete before, during and after any flight much easier and faster. Background eSortiewill cut back on the paperwork the pilots must complete after each flight by allowing them to enter their flight data directly onto an iPad in the cockpit, significantly reducing post-misson work. This application will also help in tracking pilot requirements, alerting them when they are deficient in any flying requirement, or when they have the opportunity to complete a requirement during their current flight. The pilots will be able to enter the number of hours each pilot flew during a sortie, as well as any other required tasks they accomplished during the flight. General Approach We aimed to create an easy to use application for the iPad that could be carried upon the C-17 aircraft. We chose the iPad because it allows for easy readability in the aircraft while at the same time allowing excellent portability. We aimed for the application to be very easy to use, difficult to break, and most importantly very useful to the pilots. Conclusion eSortie could be a very useful tool to C-17 pilots, helping to increase efficiency and decrease the amount of paperwork pilots need to do post-flight. By keeping close track of pilot requirements, the Air Force can avoid extra sorties to get pilots their necessary flying hours by getting as many requirements done on a flight as possible.
