ecocell What is it? What has happened so far? What are future plans? And why would we like to hear from other organisations?
What is ecocell? • Based on CEL’s vision statement of letting loose a Storm of Hope, pioneering practical discipleship, equipping prophetic witness and empowering agents for change • Course comprises a set of tools based around four key words: • See • Grieve • Hope • Act
What is ecocell? • The ecocell programme can be seen as a journey, or pilgrimage, to be travelled by groups of friends, neighbours, or church or faith group members • The final destination of this pilgrimage is sustainable living, in our personal lives • Through ecocell we hope to fulfil our personal responsibilities to Creator and Creation • You don’t have to commit to the whole journey initially, just to ecocell 1 , the first stage, and perhaps go on from there
ecocell 1 – “First Steps to Low Carbon Living” • learn further about the main issues that give rise to ecological damage • discuss the influences on our collective and individual behaviours • measure our personal impacts (footprints) • take action to minimise those impacts
ecocell 1 – “First Steps to Low Carbon Living” • CEL provides relevant expertise directly or indirectly (eg by references to the best literature) • We will also provide prayers, poems, stories and group activities to help us reflect and to inspire us to action • We get further on a journey if we make it an exciting and interesting experience • This stage can be completed within a few months, but each group sets its own pace
ecocell 1 - Structure • Facilitator’s and Users’ Guidance Notes for each Module: • Introduction • Waste • Shopping and Food • Energy in the Home • Water • Travel and Transport
ecocell 2 – “Journeys in Carbon-Free Discipleship” • Work began in January 2010 • For people who have completed ecocell 1 or an equivalent programme • Significant further learning, very committed action • Again, supported through prayer, poetry, stories and group activities, and by a range of resources available from CEL • We anticipate that this stage will take a period of about five years, to make the necessary changes in our lives
ecocell 2 - Structure • Energy Use in the Home • Food • Transport • Other Stuff • People Power plus ….. • Core Module • Footprint Calculator Spreadsheets
ecocell 2 – What’s happened so far? • Around 40 CEL members in 3 groups • Annual Conferences: • 2012 – Community Organising and Carbon Reduction • George Marshall (COIN) • 2013 – Transport and Localisation • Dr Steve Melia (University of the West of England) • 2014 - Food Sovereignty and Security • Professor Tim Lang (President of Garden Organic, Professor of Food Policy at City University)
Future Plans and Sharing with Other Organisations • Strategy Review in late 2012….options include: • Marketing ecocell for use by other organisations • Sharing experiences with organisations which use different programmes - what went well / challenges etc • Whether to establish concept of ‘full membership’ and ‘supporters’ • New members to join as individuals (not necessarily as group members) • Individuals to buddy up with each other • Identify potential general mentors and carbon accounting specialists • Consider marketing other single modules to home groups or other groups for eg Advent • Others……
