3. A visionary arrives in Sri Lanka The Founder, Rev. Father Michael Catalano, a Jesuit Priest, born on the 6th of January 1926 in Terlizzi, in the Municipality of Corato of the Province of Barri, Italy. He came to Sri Lanka about 50 years ago and worked as a missionary. His mission in Sri Lanka could be described in a prayer he recited every day.
4. PRAYER Prayer of a Missionary
To put a smile on one sad face
To touch a lonely life with grace
To calm a fear, to wipe a tear
To bring some light to one dark place
Lord, let this be my task
To do such needed thing
My whole life through
And in so doing, let me be
Much more like you
Much less like me.
5. How it all began!
6. Cato at work During the racial riots that broke out in 1977, many of the culprits were found to be from the banks of the Wellawatte & Dehiwela Canals. It was after the riots that work first started among them. The force behind the Shanti movement was Rev. Father Michael Catalano. Traveling on a motor bicycle he visited these communities.
7. Shanti means
8. What’s Shanti? Shanti is a non-sectarian, non-political and non-profit making voluntary service organization. It operates among the shanties on both banks of the Dehiwela Canal, on the 1.5 mile stretch, between the Pamankade Bridge and the sea. We deal with 816 families with 3600 people in 650 shanties.
9. VISION To foster the FULL, PERSONAL, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY GROWTH of the shanty people by involving them in a process of economic, social, cultural, civic and religious development – with a view to INTEGRATE them among themselves and with the larger community through initiating such processes which reach out and involve people in a process of humanization.

Malnutrition in pre-schools continues to be a serious health concern according to a Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics, Sri Lanka.
17% of the children, under five years have been born as low birth weight babies.
Low birth weight babies show a higher vulnerability to ill health and retarded mental and physical growth.
Living standards, water and sanitation, birth weight, birth interval, parity, sex of child, weaning practices and mother’s education are a few of the important contributory factors which have been identified.

Every week there gather about 20 people in six different places to read, cook, sew and spend time together.
For many of them, this is the only time when they have a real warm meal, someone to talk and gossip with and the facilities to watch TV and read the newspapers.
Many of them are living alone, they have to earn their living by begging.
They carry some food to those elders who are house bound.
