  14. One of the formerprograms ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  15. ASTRO-COSMO 2019 ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  16. Project Scope and Goal • To integrate the curricularphysicsprogramswith • Atomicphysics • Plasma physics • Quantum mechanics • Optics and Spectroscopy • Nuclearphyscis with experimentalapproachsupportedby attractiveastrophysical and cosmologytopics. • To switch on the students’ insterest in astrophysics and cosmology ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  17. Project Scope and Goal Provideexperimental expertise by extending the lab activities w.r.t curricularclasses Promote the teamwork and problemsolvingactivities Providestudents the right tools and indications to proceedautonomously in theirscientific cultural research ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  18. Drivers Excitementtowardsastronomy, astrophyscis, cosmology Engagement in the lab basedactivities: see, touch, be part of the game Work in the lab Interest in diving-in, without the need of performingtestsaccording to the ‘standard logic’ Beinginvolved in team-work activities Share the sameinterestswith peers ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  19. Technical Challenges To treatcomplextopicsusuallynotyetstudied by students in theircorricula Lack of mathematicalmeans Students difficulty in followingcomplexcomputations Oftenmissingbasicexperimentalknowkedge/competenceand sometimesattitude (the mobile phone generation…) Notused to performproblemsolving or to work in team ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  20. Challenges: studentsoverloading/overbooking • After a first excitement a considerablenumber of students in the secondsemester and by the end of the year slow down or give up the participation, maincauses: • excess of homework work load for preparing to tests and exams • Preparinguniversityadmissiontests • Integrative languagecoursetests for certificates, • Participationot the «Olimpycgames of maths, …phylosophy» • drivinglicence test… • A deeppreparationinphysicsmaynot be the best strategy for the finalexamination: focus energy to maximise score… «science istoughwhyshould I do more thanrequired?» • Result: a limitedgroup of survivors (stillremainseveryyear!) in the ASTRO-COSMO group. ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  21. The Lessonlearned The curricularschoolprograms force students to fall in the «learn & go-on vortex», compelled to continuouslyperformoral and writtentexts, missing to stimulatetheirinterest (just duty,…in the best cases!) Consideredthatthere are no finaltestsassessing the experimentalcompetences, the lab activityisnormallydramaticallycompressedifnotskipped (whyinvesting in this?...) Students are busy and overbooked by foreignlanguagecoursesprovidingcertificates: they are inclined to selectthisinstead of approachingafternoon science initiatives ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  22. Way outs? • Possiblesolutionssupporting the stableinvolvement of more students to deal with fundamentalsciences: • Yeld «super-credits» valuable for the finalexamination • Alternanza Scuola Lavoro • Yieldcertificatesuseful for theiracademic curriculum • Yieldcredits for physics and mathsat the university • Offer the chance to participate to internationalprojects • Validate the directaccess to the Universitybypassing the admission test, or atleast part of it • … ASTRO-COSMO and the Physics Afternoons at Pascal’s 10th Conference of Centro Fermi Projects - EEE Project, Turin 6-8 March 2019

  23. The future of ASTRO-COSMO Prj. In conjunction with the EEE prj. Excellentopportunity to work in a dynamic network, being part of a community Share the trueresearchchallengeswith top internationallevelresearchers Close the gaps betweenschool, academia and the researchworld, by integratingstudents in the scientific community The «social agreement»: the need of meeting the community expectations, helpsstudents to be more focussed and active, to re-set priorities Last butnotleast: enhanceknowledge and expertise in cosmicrays and high energyphysics: a big leapforward for enaching the scientific culture of ourstudents,….and of teachers!
