  2. I. Ecology • A. Scientific discipline that studies the relationships between organisms and their environment. • II. The Biosphere • A. Portion of Earth that supports life • B. Extends several kilometers below ocean surface and several kilometers above the Earth’s surface

  3. III. Biotic Factors • A. Living organisms that inhabit an environment • 1. animal reproduction • 2. Increases or decreases of a population • 3. Death of a particular species • IV. Abiotic Factors • A. Non living part of an organisms environment • 1. Soil, wind, moisture, light, temperature

  4. VI . Community Interactions • A. Competition- When two organisms use a resource at the same time • B. Predation- The act of one organism consuming another for food • C. Symbiosis- permanent close associates between two or more different species

  5. VII. Living in the environment • A. Habitat- an area where an organism lives out its life • 1. Robin in a tree • B. Niche- the ROLE that an organism has in its environment • 1. How it meets its need for food • 2. Buffalo and Cows are grazers of grass
