    11. Creating spaces/va.. Spirituality in Pasifika early childhood education (McDonald, 2004) - Pasifika pedagogy & content knowledge (language, cultural values, rituals, ceremonies, wisdom, geneology) - mind & heart working together “acquired dispositions to good action” (Darragh, 1997) - the dignity & sacredness of human beings Two further internal reports were completed last year which also laid down the foundations for EIT wide thinking about the needs, gaps etc and also to gain a more detailed picture of Pacific communities in the Hawkes Bay. The draft proposal was given to the last meeting of the Advisory Group and Sam will report to you what has transpired since. 12. Spirituality in Pasifika ECE - context of interdependent collectivity & interpersonal relationship - importance of ritual & metaphor - christianisation of Pasifika spirituality - many layers of our being includes our spiritual core to which we return for solace and protection So we are really at a very important time with a unique opportunity to shape the future, to assist us at EIT to be more responsive to Pacific communities in terms of our tertiary education and training needs. Populations trends are still moving towards a growing Pacific population and a youthful population. If that cohort of people are not skilled or educated, even more importantly as we come out of this economic depression the older mebers of society will have even less young productive members to keep us in a quality of life. I heard of this statistic recently- in the industrialised world in the next decade there will be more poeple over 65 than those under 5 yrs old and that is a first in our history! What we put in place now is not just for Pacific communities but for all of the Hawke’s Bay we cannot afford to have anyone unqualified and out of work or training. So how can EIT work with our communities to address this because education brings us income, income brings us choices, including the choice to be happy, healthy and contributing to our families and communities. So we are really at a very important time with a unique opportunity to shape the future, to assist us at EIT to be more responsive to Pacific communities in terms of our tertiary education and training needs. Populations trends are still moving towards a growing Pacific population and a youthful population. 13. Silences in the spaces... Knowing when to speak and when not to speak The silencing of voices in the spaces Reluctance of Pasifika parents to speak out regarding bilingual education for their children (Tuafuti, 2010) Implications for the va/ the spaces

    14. Teu Le Va & Te Whariki To grow up as competent learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society (p.9) Holistic Development (p.14)

    15. TE WHARIKI... Children's theories about the world are “infused with a spiritual dimension” (p 44) Adults should “acknowledge spiritual dimensions” (p 46) Adults should recognise “the spiritual dimension of children's lives” (p 41) The “important place of spirituality in the development of the whole child” (p 47)

    16. Spirituality in the holistic curriculum Confusion between spirituality and religion leads to avoidance/non-engagement? “Spirituality has the power to introduce mystery and wonder into otherwise mundane events”. Bone, Cullen & Loveridge (2007, p.344)

    17. In the Montessori casa.. Bone et al (2007) A sense of order The importance of calm environment Collective silence as a powerful experience Courtesy- 'care of the other', forgetting the self, sense of 'oneness' Unlimited good in this place, a place to replenish & reenergise the spirit Connection beyond the material Open and welcome to difference

    18. p350 This spiritually in-between space constitutes a place of transition and gives opportunity for transformation. To affirm wholeness challenges practice that alienates and fragments The sacredness of being a teacher So we are really at a very important time with a unique opportunity to shape the future, to assist us at EIT to be more responsive to Pacific communities in terms of our tertiary education and training needs. Populations trends are still moving towards a growing Pacific population and a youthful population. 19. Pedagogy inclusive of spirituality Respects difference affirms social justice Freedom to change/question/examine what it means to be together in this 'space'/va To critique the status quo to ensure equitable and inclusive practice beyond surface, material accommodation So we are really at a very important time with a unique opportunity to shape the future, to assist us at EIT to be more responsive to Pacific communities in terms of our tertiary education and training needs. 20. Implications for Pasifika ECE Celebration & articulation of the spiritual dimension of our holistic curriculum Spiritual wellbeing of children and adults Respect for silences and the cessation of silencing Creating, maintaining, guarding the spaces/va where we meet in true connectedness and equality: shared foundational values, beliefs, identities, languages.... So we are really at a very important time with a unique opportunity to shape the future, to assist us at EIT to be more responsive to Pacific communities in terms of our tertiary education and training needs.
