  2. First Continental Congress • September 1774 • Philadelphia • Purpose-determine how to react to the threat to their rights and liberties. • Delegates • Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, George Washington, John Dickinson, John Jay

  3. Actions of the Congress • Suffolk Resolves called for a repeal of the Intolerable Acts. • Declaration of Rights and Grievances was a petition to the king to make right colonial grievances and restore colonial rights. • The Association urged the creation of committees to enforce economic sanctions of the Suffolk Resolve. • Called for a Second Continental Congress if colonial rights were not recognized.

  4. Lexington and Concord • April 18, 1775 • First fighting in the American Revolution • British troops sent to seize military supplies. • Minutemen (militia) warned by Paul Revere and William Dawes

  5. Bunker Hill • June 17, 1775 • Actually Breed’s Hill • Britain took the hill but Americans claimed a victory.

  6. Second Continental Congress • May 1775 • Philadelphia • Two divisions • Declaration of independence • Negotiating a new relationship with Britain • Declaration of the Causes and Necessities for Taking Up Arms • Called on colonies to provide troops • George Washington appointed commander-in-chief

  7. Olive Branch Petition (July 1775) • Sent to King George III • Colonies pledged their loyalty to the king and asked for peace and the protection of colonial rights. • Prohibitory Act (August 1775) • Declared the colonies in rebellion.

  8. Thomas Paine • Common Sense • Called for colonies to become independent states and break all political ties with Britain.
