Budget and Budget Justification • What you need to ask for: salary, instruments, evaluation, students, travel, and more • Budget categories and allowable expenses • Academic year support versus summer salary • Instrument contracts and maintenance • How do you justify your request • How does your budget align with what you are saying in the proposal • Key elements of the budget justification

Budget Exercise: Thinking About Your Proposed Project • Use the index card provided to identify the major budget categories for your proposed project • Specifically consider what categories you have left out and what categories you under-estimated and what categories are not allowed • Use your index card to revise your budget and budget justification • Add specific budget issues to your punch list
