  1. IDS-NF Update Report on the Mumbai Plenary Meeting Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  2. Principal Outcomes Proposed Changes to the Baseline • Low-Energy Neutrino Factory • If θ13 has been measured at the time the Reference Design Report (RDR) is in preparation (latter half of 2012), then the Low Energy Neutrino Factory will be the Neutrino Factory option that will be presented in the RDR • Foglie et al.: sin22q13 = 0.02 ± 0.01 • If θ13 has not been measured, i.e. measurements have only yielded an improved upper limit, then the present baseline Neutrino Factory (25 GeV stored muon energy serving detectors at 3000—5000 km and 7000—8000 km) will be presented in the RDR. Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  3. sin22q13 > 0.01 Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  4. Reminder: LENF q13 Reach Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  5. A Caveat The LENF is more sensitive to a short fall in statistics that 25 GeV with magic BL where the reach falls off smoothly with statistics Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  6. LENF Detector • Baseline – 20kT (fiducial) TASD • Main R&D issue is Magnetic Volume • Possible Detector Options • SuperMind • Mind with 1 cm Fe plates • Need MC simulation to determine n event E threshold • LAr • Cost • Will depend on how the technology develops Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  7. Staging • The physics section will also discuss the possible staging scenario’s • Starting with LENF • 4.5 GeV, single detector @ 1300km • Alternate single baseline (3000 km? in order to be above t threshold. • Upgrading to 25 GeV facility Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  8. LENF Near-Term To Do List These tasks will fall heavily on Fermilab effort • Need full description of Accelerator facility • FERMILAB-PUB-09-001-APC can be used as starting point • Launch Magnetic Volume R&D • How to fund? • Need full MC simulation for TASD • Perform n event energy threshold study of SuperMind • How to integrate LAr R&D????? • Or how to avoid a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  9. Baseline Changes, continued With Respect to the 25 GeV Facility • Silver-channel detector at the intermediate baseline (3000—5000 km) • The physics case combined with an assessment of the manpower available to develop a costed design of the silver-channel detector for the IDR at present do not justify the inclusion of a silver-channel detector at the intermediate baseline; • There is a clear need to study t-production at the near detector, this requirement is included in the near detector specification (see below); and • In view of the possibility that the understanding of the physics case and of the technological opportunities may change (e.g. the possibility that a detector capable of providing a very large sample of τ-appearance events), the IDR will carry the cost of sizing the cavern (or caverns) at the intermediate baseline such that a t-detector could be added. Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  10. Baseline Changes, continued • Mass of Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector (MIND) • The mass of the MIND detector at the intermediate baseline (3000—5000 km) be increased from 50 kT to 100 kT; and • The mass and granularity of the MIND detector at the magic baseline (7000—8000 km) be reviewed by the PPEG and Detector working groups with a view to revising the baseline specification for the MIND at the magic baseline. • Near Detector – MUCH WORK TO BE DONE!! • Measurements required to address systematic uncertainties in the measurement of neutrino oscillation • Unique opportunities for neutrino physics at the near detector: • Electroweak, QCD, polarised and unpolarised structure function measurements; and • The search for non-standard interactions through the detection of nt. Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  11. Baseline Changes, continued • Proton driver bunch spacing and beam energy • The specification for the bunch timing in the proton driver bunch train be revised such that the inter-bunch spacing be greater than 17 μs and less than 140 μs. • The proton driver beam energy specification be revised such that beam the proton beam kinetic energy be in the range 4—15 GeV. Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  12. Convergence towards the IDR Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009

  13. US Contribution to IDS-NF RDR • PD • Input w/r to Project X • Target Station • Full Engineering Design? • How would this fit into 5 Year Plan? • Front end • Neuffer Capture, Bunching Phase Rotation • Cooling (2a lattice) • Acceleration • T.B.D. • RLA • FFAG • LENF • Accelerator Facility • Detector MC • TASD & SuperMind • How do we accomplish this in a “Hostile” environment? • Detector R&D • Large Magnetic Volume Alan Bross MCTF Friday Meeting October 30, 2009
