  4. My Hypothesis • Leaders are born. • Everyone is called to lead. • Not everyone “hears” the call. • Heeding and pursuing the call is determined by choice. • The right choices result in leadership development. • Leadership development is a process. • There is a PATTERN to it. Called To Lead

  5. The Pattern Significance Maturity Relational Learning Personal Development Change/Renewal Self Awareness The Defining Moment Unconscious Preparation Called To Lead

  6. What do I mean by “Call” • A call is your “human will” moving you in one direction. • Calls are invitations from “life” to serve, to activate your life toward a cause worthy of you and the human family. – John Schuster, “Answering the call” A Spiritual Undertone – Replace “human will”, “life” for Manufacturer! Called To Lead

  7. Eureka The Defining Moment Whether by accident or design, there are moments when, because of a readiness within us and a collaboration with events occurring around us, we are forced to seriously appraise ourselves and the condition under which we live and to make certain choices that will affect the rest of our lives. “Who am I?” “What is my purpose?” Called To Lead

  8. An Underlying Order The Human Life Cycle: A Sequence of seasons – struggling through various degrees of self knowledge and self invention. And at the “Noon” of Life: • Coming to terms with the Meaning of Life. • The Call to Greater Wholeness. - Levinson/Jung etc Called To Lead

  9. The Whole Person Paradigm • Physical needs - for food/ shelter/ work/ clothing • Social needs - for loving and being loved, inclusion, recognition, self identity • Mental needs - for developing the mind through mental exercise; through study/ learning • Spiritual needs - for taking care of one’s soul, for doing something that really matters, something that has meaning, for being at peace with one’s God A balance of all the needs is what gives a fulfilling life Called To Lead

  10. Self Actualization "What a man can be, he must be. This need we may call self-actualization… It refers to the desire for self-fulfillment, namely, to the tendency for him to become actualized in what he is potentially. This tendency might be phrased as the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming.“ - Abraham Maslow Called To Lead

  11. Perspectives on the Defining Moment • Warren Bennis & Robert J.Thomas • All of the truly effective leaders they studied, regardless of age, had undergone at least one intense, transformational experience” that set them on their “desired, even inevitable” leadership paths. • Daniel Goleman • Sudden shocking discoveries about our lives shaking us into action,”wowing” us with a stark truth about ourselves and offering new clarity about our lives. • John Maxwell • Leadership Defining Crucibles Called To Lead

  12. Leadership Defining Crucibles • Ground breakers – these experiences literally thrust one out and enable them to break new ground. • Heart breakers - those painful, unwelcome events that stop one in their tracks and force them to re-evaluate priorities. • Cloud breakers – the encounters allow one to see the big picture – suddenly & clearly – like never before. • Chart breakers – those defining moments allow one to soar with confidence. Called To Lead
