Enterprise & Service-Oriented Architectures. What Is An Enterprise Architecture?.
E N D
What Is An Enterprise Architecture? Enterprise Architecture is the description of the current and/or future structure and behaviour of an organization's processes, information systems, personnel and organizational sub-units, aligned with the organization's core goals and strategic direction.
What Is A Service-Oriented Architecture? Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural style that guides all aspects of creating and using business processes, packaged as services, throughout their lifecycle, as well as defining and provisioning the IT infrastructure that allows different applications to exchange data and participate in business processes loosely coupled from the operating systems and programming languages underlying those applications.

EA/SOA & LJMU • The Information Systems Architecture project completed initial work in this area • We have the necessary Governance framework in place • We are developing technical services (LCS; involvement with XCRI) • Oracle Fusion = SOA • We have successfully bid for funding for the JISC Enterprise Architecture pilot
LJMU Enterprise Architecture Pilot (LEAP) • Funded for 2008 to pilot the application of the Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) in HE/LJMU • Involves definition of specific architecture for LJMU and feeding back to generic JISC model • Focus on SOA opportunities • Funding buys staff time but also includes procurement of EA software tools etc
TOGAF Process
Benefits for LJMU • Opportunity to: • define our IT architecture, linking process, data, applications and infrastructure = in essence, defining what services we require now/in future, and which systems deliver/will deliver these service • be flexible and future-proofed • standardise data and processes • benefit from work being carried out elsewhere in the community
Role of IMSG • Act as Steering Group for the project • Assist with quality assurance ie ensuring that outputs are complete, relevant, & understandable to stakeholders • Take a view as to the value of the project & make decisions on future EA work at LJMU
