  2. Purpose of the Training: To ensure safety in retailer pesticide shops for: • Retailer’s or shopkeeper’s short term and long term health. • To protect health of customers.

  3. Environmental Safety Management of Pesticide Shop • Proper air circulation facility and ventilation . • Floor made from non-absorbable materials. • Post on wall contact information for emergency and medical help. • Wear musk when in shop area with pesticides dust • Non-absorbable shelves where pesticides are stored

  4. Retailer’s Shop Display of Pesticides on shelves • World Health Organization (WHO)mandates the pesticides bottles are color coded. • Non-absorbable shelves where pesticides are stored: • Red self- for very highly toxic pesticide. • Yellow self- for moderately toxic pesticide. • Green self – for low toxic pesticide. • Should kept displayed pesticides on their shelves in this vertical arrangement.

  5. Retailer’s Shop Display of Pesticides on shelves • This arrangement helps protecting child from grabbing and inadvertently swallowing highly toxic pesticide. • Always discourage children from free access to the retailer’s shop.

  6. Environmental Safety Management of Pesticide Shop • Wear plastic or rubber gloves loading storing or cleaning up pesticide spills • Wash hands frequently in the day (soap and water) when selling handling bottles/ packets of pesticides especially before eating • The storeshould be constructed with appropriate materials to ensure that pesticides are protected from weather conditions • Light • Sun • Rain • wind

  7. Environmental Safety Management of Pesticide Shop • The store should be arranged in such a way that the pesticides are classified into categories (e.g. Insecticides, fungicides, herbicides etc.) • The store should have spill managementmaterials (e.g. sand, sawdust etc.), for • the neutralization and the collection of pesticides, in case of leakages • Rags, soap, water, basin/bucket for cleaning spills on floor and shelves

  8. Environmental Safety Management of Pesticide Shop • The floor/wall must be without cracks, without damps, made of materials which do not absorb pesticides • The store does not cause any kind of pollution or inconvenience to neighboring houses or stores • Volatile pesticides (specially opened containers of liquids, dusts and granulated pesticides should not kept indoors, especially in closed rooms.

  9. Guidelines to Store Pesticides Safely • Long term pesticide storage and disposal can be hazardous to human health and the environment. Both the retailer and farmer should follow these safety recommendations: • Do not stockpile • Reduce storage needs by buying only the amount of pesticide that you will need during the current season when the pest is active. • Return ‘out of date’ or ‘GoB unregistered’ pesticides to dealer or company for disposal

  10. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Store pesticides in a moderate, dry, well-ventilated area • Protected from freezing temperatures and away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

  11. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Store flammable liquids far away from an ignition source • such as a furnace, a car, kerosene stoves and wood fire etc. • Never store pesticides in cabinets with or near food, animal feed, or medical supplies

  12. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Do not store pesticides in places where flooding is possible or in places where they might spill or leak into wells, drains, groundwater, or surface water. • Always store pesticides in their original containers • Never transfer pesticides to soft drink bottles or other containers. • Preserve the product label in a legible condition • Do not allow the label to become missing, damaged, or destroyed.

  13. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Inspect containers periodically for damage or leak • In cleaning and maintenance of shops use PPE. • Never let anyone eat, drink, or smoke in the storage or retailer facility • Do not keep gasoline, kerosene, or other combustible materials with the pesticides • Chemical-resistant gloves and footwear during loading, shifting or spill management

  14. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Make sure pesticides are not kept near operations which present a fire hazard, such as burning and welding, etc. • Do not leave any pesticide container in full sun or next to a heater. • Store pesticides on glass or metal shelves with a lip or on wood shelves covered with plastic or chemically resistant epoxy paint. Leak-proof plastic trays on shelves work well.

  15. Guidelines To Store Pesticides Safely • Keep the area free of debris such as waste paper, rags, or used cardboard boxes, which may provide an ignition source • Clean up any spills immediately • Store dry formulations on the highest shelves. Store liquids and glass containers on the lowest level. This will prevent contamination in case a liquid container leaks
