  1. REPUBLIC OF IRAQ MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE VETERINARY DIRECTORATE CENTERAL VETERINARY LAB. NATIONAL PROJECT FOR CONTROLLING BRUCELLOSIS & T.B. Brucellosis in Iraq DR. AHMED MUNEER ADUL-RAHMAN PROJECT DIRECTOR

  2. DISEASE HISTORY

  3. BRUCELLOSIS IN IRAQ • FIRST HUMAN DIAGNOSIS IN 1939 BY AL-BAYATI • Brucella melitensis • Brucella abortus • - BIOTYPE OF BRUCELLA IN IRAQ • Brucella melitensis biotype (3) is the main cause of Human brucellosis (Malta fever) in Iraq

  4. BRUCELLOSIS PROJECT • ESTABLISHED IN 1996 • VACCINE PRODUCTION: • KITS PRODUCTION: • 2003 Destroyed through war • 2005 Rebuild and attack again • 2008- 2010 rebuild again

  5. WHAT PROJECT DO? • 1. CONTROLLING STRATEGY OF DISEASE(ASSISTANT OF FAO ORGANIZTION) • 2. VACCINATION CAMPAIGNS . • 3. SURVEILLANCE AND MONITORING OF THE DISEASE AND SEROLOGICAL TEST • 4. IMMUNE RESPONSE AFTER VACCINATION • 5. TRAINING .. VET STAFF. • 6. RELATIONSHIP WITH INSTITUTES, COLLAGES , MINISTRY OF HEALTH ( M.O.H. ) AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (FAO,OIE,WHO )

  6. Brucellosis prevalence In Iraq except Kurdistan governorate In 2005 Rose Bengal test (RBT )% ELISA test%

  7. VACCINATION CAMPAIGNS (SHEEP &GOAT) EXCEPT KURDISTAN • TARGET ANIMAL : SHEEP & GOAT • TYPE OF VACCINE : Rev1 • ROUTE OF ADMINSTRATION : SUBCUTANEOUS • PERIOD OF PROGRAME : 15 YEARS • ESTABLISHED IN : 2006 • VACCINATION CAMPAIGNS • 2006 mass vaccination sheep & goat (REV1)subcutaneous (S/C) • (9.528.022) with reduce dose (2x107 ) C.F.U / dose • 2007 vaccinate (4.717.597) ( 3-8 ) months lambs & kids with reduce dose • 2008 no vaccine only in some governorates (Ninawa &Kirkuk) • (753.153) lambs & kids (3-8 ) months with full dose (1 - 2 x 109 ) C.F.U / dose

  8. VACCINATION CAMPGINS IN LAMBS& KIDS 3 -8 MONTHS

  9. Reduce human brucellosis (3556) cases between 2005 -2013 increase population of (15) governorate (6.810.000) millions = 22.48 % from total population All table information from IRAQI M.O.H reports HUMAN INCIDENCE OF BRUCELLOSIS (15 GOVERNORATES )

  10. Monitoring of brucellosis abortion cases in sheep &goats between 2011 -2013 in 15 governorates • Reduce of abortion cases ( 4768 ) case between 2011 -2013 • All table information from epidemiological department – veterinary directorate ..

  11. COAST OF CONTROLLING PROGRAMME • The cost of vaccine supplies ,vaccination campaigns & lab. instruments from 2009 -2013 in sheep & goat about = 5.000.000.000 billion IRAQI dinars (I.D. ) = 4. 167 .000 million US. dollars • the vaccination campaigns protect (22.48% ) of Iraqi people ( 15 governorates ) & reduce (93.7% ) of sheep & goat abortions with low coast that indicate the success of controlling programme

  12. BRUCELLOSIS CONTROL IN CATTLE & BUFFALO • WE SUGGEST TO BRING VACC. S19 TO VACCINATE CALVES ( 3-6) MONTH (15 GOVERNORATE) THAT BECAUSE : • SINGLE DOSE WHOLE LIFE • MORE ACTIVE FROM ALL VACCINES USED IN CATTEL & BUFFALO. • ( RB51) HAS A SELECTIVE ADVANTAGE ( not affective against brucella abortus biovar 1 in buffalo )

  13. VACCINATION WITH RB51 IN COWS PREVENT; • 59.4% of abortion • 58.6 % of cow infection • 61.0 % of fetal infection • RB51 VACCINE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN S19

  14. PROBLEMS IN CONTROLLING PROGRAM • DELAYED VACCINE SUPPLEMENT WHICH CAUSE PROGRAM DISTURBANCE (2007 & 2008 ) • MIGRATION SOME HERDS OF SHEEP & GOAT FROM CENTRAL &SOUTHERN REGIONS ( SUBCUTANEOUS VACCINATION PROGRAME ) TO THE NORTH ( KURDISTAN PROVINCE) WHICH THEY USE DIFFERENT PROGRAME (CONJUNCTIVAL VACCINATION) • UNCONTROLLED ON SHARED PASTURES IN THE BORDER AREAS BETWEEN IRAQ,IRAN ,SYRIA &TURKEY LEAD TO ENTRY & EXIT OF SHEEP ,GOAT,CATTLE HERDS WILL CAUSE TRANSMISSION OF INFECTION

  15. Map of sheep & goat migration

  16. THE PROJECT AIM TO : • REDUCE HUMEN BRUCELLOSIS TO LESS THAN 4/100000 THROUGH CONTROLLING THE DISEASES IN ANIMALS • REDUCE INFECTION & ABORTION IN ANIMALS • SHEEP & GOAT LESS THAN 2% • CATTLE & BUFFALO LESS THAN 0.2% • WE SUGGEST ANOTHER PLAN WHEN ARRIVE TO THE RESULTS ABOVE • TEST & SLAUGHTER WITH COVERING OF VACCINE (conjunctival vaccination ) 0 .
