  2. How, Why, What? For those here that talk to people in my college We introduced new Study Centres with no video playback facilities It was a project oversight Or.....

  3. Doh!

  4. Why? • Simple, at the time no one was thinking about video collections.

  5. I have a cunning plan! We have lots of PCs....What if we digitised our recordings?

  6. Techie bit

  7. Hardware Overview • 2 x HP DL380 G3’s running MS Server 2003 • 1 x Mac + EyeTV Software + Tuner • 1 x PC running MS XP & Expression Encoder • 1 x Osprey Video Capture Card • 1 x VCR/DVD Player • Freeview Box

  8. Server Setup Configuration • Servers running a DFS • MS Windows Media Streaming Services • NLB’d

  9. TV Feed and Recordings • iMac • Elgato DTT Tuner In my experience this has proven stable and reliable in comparison with other setups

  10. Encoder • Originally Windows Media Encoder (free) • Now MS Expression Encoder(costs a small amount but can give SilverLight output, chaptering, overlays etc)

  11. Transmission • Mostly Unicast • Tested 100+ unicast streams. • Multicast streams also viable, but no end user control in setup. • Wrapper (doesn’t work well on a Mac)

  12. Live TV • Weeks of telephone calls and emails. Don’t get me started about the TV Licensing company. • Ofcom finally confirms its ok

  13. Live TV • Freeview box connect to my VCR, VCR connected to my Osprey card, Osprey Card connected to my elbow..... • Expression Encoder captures and re-encodes the stream sending it to the Windows Media Streaming server

  14. Recording requests • All in one homemade EPG and request application that resides on our portal

  15. The future • IIS 7 + Smooth Streaming + Adaptive Encoding • Silverlight media players • End user control for Multicast setup • HD • Sky
