Born on Dec. 2, 1991 in Yeosu, on the south coast of Korea, she was a member of the Korean national team at the Guangzhou Asian Games. There, she surprised many people by winning the 200m breaststroke. She took the lead after the first 50 meters and beat two Chinese rivals. She finished the race with a record time of 2 minutes, 25.02 seconds. Like another Korean swimming icon, Park Tae-hwan, 19-year-old Jeong won a surprise gold medal. It had been 12 years since a Korean female swimmer had taken the gold medal. Jeong was full of emotion and burst into tears when celebrating in the Asiad. “I realized I could go for the win when I saw no one ahead of me after the 100m point turn,” she said after the race. Her interview in which she cried won many fans. With her gold medal race and charming looks, she quickly rose to stardom.
