  1. GSC11(06)_JOINT_12 Developed Status of FTTH in China China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) 5 October 2014 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  2. Outline • General • FTTH technologies developing in China • Trial and application situation • Standards developing status • summary GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  3. General • There are total 4.05M km cable have been installed in China • 160×10Gb/s and 80×40Gb/s DWDM system have been used in commercial network • ASON, MSTP have been deployed in core and Metro network. • Access network is still the bandwidth bottleneck. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  4. Outline • General • FTTH technologies developing in China • Trial and application situation • Standards developing status • summary GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  5. Technology Choices • Two major FTTH architectures: P2P and PON. • P2P good for:enough CO space, subs sparsely located and their distances to CO vary, and/or high scalability requirements in b/w. • P2P SDH for big and medium corporations • P2P Ethernet for homes and small businesses • PON good for:limited CO space, subs are closely located and their distances to CO similar, low scalability in # of users and b/w. • Both P2P and PON be used in China. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  6. Technology Choices • APON is used very less in China • EPON dominates FTTH market • For home and small office with high-density • Provide POTS, Internet, IPTV, VOIP, and maybe CATV • Cheap and easy to evolve to NGN • GPON will be mainly used for FTTO • For medium size corporations with high-density • Provide POTS, Internet, IPTV, VOIP, leased lines • Make the best use of exiting SDH network resource GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  7. GEPON products (OLT) • 17U sub-frame,48Gb/s capacity. • 18 slots,2 for core switching,16 for line cards • 2×GEPON-OLT/card, one OLT supports 1:32 splitter. • Per sub-frame supports 1024 ONU. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  8. FTTO type • Support 1 or 2×PON、8×POTS、4×FE、2×E1 • 220V/-48V Power supply optional。 ~ = GEPON products (ONU) • FTTH type • Support 1×PON、2×POTS、2×FE、1×RF (for CATV) • 220V power adapter. • Spare power supply. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  11. FTTH Target Market • High end residence, especially the new builds, will be the starting point for FTTH • They are wealthy, seeking for modem life with advanced technologies • Large scale deployment, easy for planning, deployment and maintenance High end residence • Most users in business building/CBD requires high bandwidth and integrated services. This type of users generates high ARPU • They need triple play plus TDM leased lines • They are more concerned of stability and quality, not sensitive to cost Business/CBD • Internet bar are very popular in China, they usually closely located to each other and need lot of b/w • ADSL does not meet b/w requirement, FTTH is a good solution • Because of close location, PON is a good choice Internet bar GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  12. China’s FTTH Roadmap Stage 1 Research and development Stage 3 Commercial deployment and operation Stage 2 Testing and field trial Phase1:Testing Equipment maturity and availability Phase3:Small Scale Deployment Operation and maintenance Phase2:Field Trial Deployment and business model 2007 2006.6 2004.6 2003.11 2005.9 2004.12 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  13. FTTH Current Deployment • By end of 2005, about 10K commercial FTTH subscribers and another 10K in field trials. By end of 2006, may be 120K. • The biggest FTTH network has about 1000 subscribers • Beijing, Wuhan, Shanghai and Hangzhou are major cities with FTTH deployment, more than 20 cities are involved. • China Telecom and China Netcom are two major carriers in FTTH deployment and operation • Almost all the deployments are using GEPON • The major equipment vendors include Fiberhome, UTstarcom, ZTE, ASB and Huawei • About 75% of over all FTTH deployment using Fiberhome’s equipment GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  17. FTTH Applications • Multiple play • POTS voice: provide RJ11 interface with built-in IAD • VoIP voice: provide Ethernet interface for IP phone • Internet: Ethernet inteface • IPTV: Ethernet interface to a STB • CATV: CATV cable interface • TDM leased line: E1/T1 • Because of regulation restrictions, most deployments do not provide CATV • IP phone is not usually provided due to its less popularity GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  18. Deployment Model • By telecos and CATV providers • Same as that for the existing BB access networks • Invest once and profit in a long term • By telecos, CATV providers and house builders • House builders responsible for deployment, deployment cost counts into into house price • Telecos and CATV responsible for operation and maintenance • Multiple parties share the profit • By residential service providers (RSP) • RSP responsible for network operation and maintenance • Telecos responsible for providing exit port and b/w • Services provided by multiple-parties GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  19. Operation Model • By telecos and CATV providers • Enough operation experience • No interworking and inter-billing problem • Hard for triple-play • By residential service providers • Easy for integrated planning and deployment of the overall information platform • Evolution to NGN • Encourage competition • Network resource sharing • Tailong model in Chengdu is the first attempt GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications
