  2. What is tenure? Under Public School Code, tenure is a status enjoyed by professional employees that provides enhanced protection from termination of employment and layoffs. Temporary and professional employees attain tenure, and become professional employees, upon successful completion of a three-year probationary period. 24 P.S. § 11-1108

  3. Transferring tenure – Under current law, a teacher needs to earn tenure only once in Pennsylvania, and thereafter holds that status in Pennsylvania school districts in which they are hired. 24 P.S.§ 11-1108

  4. Requirements for Tenure • Teachers must serve a probationary period of three years, and have received a satisfactory rating during the last four (4) months of the final year. 24 P.S. § 11-1108 (b) (2) • Service as a substitute teacher does not count toward tenure. • All of the probationary period must be served in the same district 24 P.S. § 11- 1108 • A teacher must be working during the entire probationary period.   5. Is tenure automatic? Temporary professional employees automatically become tenured professional employees when their work has been certified as satisfactory by the superintendent during the last four months of their probationary period with that school district. Notice of all the attainment of this status shall be sent to the secretary of the school district, recorded in the records, and written notification sent to the employee. After attainment of this status, a temporary professional employee must be tendered a regular professional employee contract. 24 P.S. § 11- 1108 (b) (3)

  6. If you are eligible for tenure within the Wilson school district, you do not need to do anything. HR will complete the paper work and put your name on the Board agenda for approval. LEVEL I to LEVEL II • Level I PA Instructional and Educational specialist certificates are valid for six (6) years of service • You must have earned 24 post-baccalaureate credits • If you have been teaching in Pennsylvania on a Level I certificate for a minimum of three years and have the earned credits, you may be eligible to convert to a Level II. • You must take the initiative to convert your certificate, please visit the link on PDE’s website • DO NOT allow your certification to expire; you will not be granted a new certificate and you will be ineligible to teach in Pennsylvania.

  9. Current (as of July 2010) Forms/Application Fees: • PDE 338 G • PDE 338 P These forms must be completed by you, your licensed physician*,and Dr. Ruth. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete them. • Level II Application, effective 7/1/2010 is $40.00 • Information regarding Level II requirements may also be found on the back of your current certificate. * You do not need physician sign-off if you’ve attached a copy of your certificate – please read the directions with the form.
