Political cartoons serve as a powerful medium for social commentary, encapsulating opinions on current issues. Essential components include relevance to a current topic, the use of symbolism, and a clear opinion or critique. Common symbols like the elephant for the Republican Party and the donkey for the Democratic Party convey complex political ideas succinctly. Students will collaborate in groups to ideate and draft a political cartoon that meets these criteria, with topics ranging from national debt to same-sex marriage laws.
