  2. History of American economy • in the 20th century, after WWII- the largest and strongest economy • world`s leading country in: • industry – 25% of world`s production • technology • agriculture • in the past a foundation of financial world • to help countries after WWII

Since WWII • economic independence • The International Monetary Fund, The World Bank… • industry developed: • N.Y., Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan • cities as industrial centres: • N.Y.C., Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and the western states…leaving the countryside low wages labor unions: work. hours, minimum wage, retirement…

Industry • the leading sector (20% GDP) of economy together with services and trade • more than 350 new industries: gambling, fibre optic cable manufacturing, satellite communication, computer software, environmental consulting… • raw materials and deposits: • oil and gas – Texas, Oklahoma, Gulf of Mexico, Wyoming, Alaska • coal – the Appalachian Mountains, Lake Michigan, Ohio • gold, silver, platinum, uranium, copper, sulphur – Alaska, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, N. Mexico, Dakota • not self-sufficient • leading industries : chemical, machinery, car, aeronautics, space technology, high-tech, computer • mining: 1st – oil, salt, molybden ore, china clay, 2nd – coal, gas, sulphur

Agriculture • a half of land used for agriculture, a good quality soil, export prevails, 1.2% GDP • 2.5% labor force, 15% of world`s production, 20% arable soil (intensive, mechanised, artif. fertilisers): • between Appalach. Mount. and the Rocky Mount. • a wheat belt: western prairies • a corn belt: Central lowlands (also soybeans, corn, sunflower) • cotton belt: the south (also rice, tobacco, sugar cane, groundnut) • fruit and vegetable belt: California • keep: • livestock - cattle, pigs, poultry: prairies, ranches/mount., basins • grow: • corn, soybeans, tomatoes, oranges, apples, tobacco – greatest producer • pineapple, sugar cane –Hawai • fishing - one of five biggest fishing out countries, forestry – 1/3 land, one of the greatest exporters of lumber

  6. Services • 2/3 of force labor, 80% GDP • financial – New York Stock Exchange (world`s largest) • business services • banking, investment • tourism and transport

Work • a capitalist country • ‘American Dream’ – hardworking people • 40 hours/week, minimum wage about $5.15/hour • less vacation (2+2 weeks) X EU, produce more • gaps in income depending on race, gender, geography (North X South…) • lower taxes, lower cost of living  higher disposable income • problems: • Great Depression X Global Financial Crisis 2008, greying population, 8% unemployment,
