  2. 1. Write a 4 sentence paragraph summarizing the Election of 1800

  3. The Election of 1800 was a battle between the Federalists and the Republicans. Jefferson and Burr each received 73 votes and the decision to break the tie was passed to the House. After 6 days, the Federalists (thanks to Hamilton’s coaxing) finally cast their votes for Jefferson as President. This election led to the 12th amendment which changed how the President and Vice President are elected.

  4. 2. Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency1801-1809 • first President inaugurated in the new capital city of Washington D.C. • Speech is one of the best of all time.

  5. 3. First Inaugural Address • Emphasized the need to mend bitterness between Federalists and Republicans • Remember what the country was founded on---republicanism • Laissez-faire attitude…. “Let people do as they choose”

  6. 4. Louisiana Purchase-1803 • Napoleon needs $ for war with England. • Livingston & Monroe make the Louisiana Purchase from France.

  7. #4 con’t • The United States paid $15 million for the land, roughly 3 cents per acre. • Jefferson questioned if this purchase was Constitutional but decided it was under the treaty making powers of the president

  8. #5 Effect? The purchase doubled the size of the United States and gives US control of Mississippi River

  9. #6 Lewis and Clark Expedition • Jefferson's goals: • Gather information (scientific) • Find and map a water route to the Pacific (Northwest Passage) • May 1804 • Meriwether Lewis and William Clark depart on 8,000 mile expedition which takes over 2 years • Effect? • Inspired people to move westward Map of Lewis and Clark’s Route

  10. Duel of 1804 Alexander Hamilton Aaron Burr (VP) Political enemies for years, finally settle their differences. Hamilton is killed!

Barbary WarsTimeline • For years pirates have attacked American trading ships in the Mediterranean Sea, forcing them to pay bribes and ransom (tribute). • 1801-a US naval fleet wages a war against the Barbary pirates. • 1803 – Jefferson faces much criticism for his decisions made regarding the war. Barbary States

February, 1804-The Philadelphia runs aground at Tripoli and its crew and captain are taken captive • The Philadelphia was destroyed by fire by our own navy so the pirates can’t use it. • September 1804 – The final battle took place in the Tripoli Harbor off the coast of Africa. • EFFECT: USA ended piracy in the Mediterranean Sea.

  13. Embargo Act of 1807 • America was once again trapped between England and France • England attacks US ship Chesapeake /impressment • Jefferson wants to stay neutral and prohibited trade with all foreign nations • This was highly unsuccessful and devastated the American Economy
