  2. In electrodeionization water treatment processes, electricity is used along with ion exchange resins or membranes to remove ionized impurities from water. It is an electrically driven technology that is used for water purification. Electrodeionization is employed to remove salts and organic acids from water. An electrodeionization system comprises a set of chambers that is filled with ion exchange resins which are again separated by ion-exchange membranes. When the water enters the electrodeionization system, the applied electric field forces the impure ions to move out of the system by passing through the ion exchange membranes. The ion exchange resins replace the impure ions with new pure ions thus completing the purification process. This water can be further used for additional treatment to upgrade the water quality. The ion exchange resin is under a constant provision of an electric field. The constant electric supply continuously regenerates the ion exchange bed. When the ions pass through the resins, particularly between cation and anion membranes, they are exchanged with H+ and OH- ions. If the ions are bound to the resins, then they can be migrated to a separate chamber with the help of an externally applied electric field. Ions that are migrated to the chamber are flushed out of the system.

  3. Although electrodeionization water treatment system is designed for optimal performance, there are chances of overloading which can lead to the reduction of the efficiency of the system. To get the best results, it is better to limit the maximum arrival rate of the ions. This can be done by reducing the hardness of water with the help of the reverse osmosis process and by degassing the carbon dioxide present in the water. One of the key benefits of electrodeionization is less maintenance cost and requirement. Usually, it takes almost one year to replace the ion exchange bed before it is completely exhausted.
