Me & my work • From a small town in Hanoi • Major in Commerce (1995) and gained MBA (2003) • CEO of Apollo where I have worked nearly 20 years • Apollo has 9 schools & 10000 students • One of the most prestigious education organizations
Pre-departure objectives • The use of technology in schools and language training institutions • Blended learning - observe examples, learning and sharing views • Teacher training and development: role of public and private sectors in Portland
Revised Objectives – After 1st Week in Portland • Understand more about Public Private Partnership (PPP), how to actively promote that in Vietnam • Apply "leadership from where you sit" as part of daily tasks • Find daily opportunities to help people to blossom and light up their passion • Seed long-term partnerships which will continue • Innovative ideas to apply to education in Vietnam
What have I done 1. Workshops/ Lectures/ Guest speakers 2. Working with IELP/ off campus meetings/ explore PSU campus 3. Getting lost in Portland and Oregon: great people/ great places/ great foods
Went to many schools… found written information in Vietnamese
Discussed education management with Saturday Academy & Portland Public Schools
Figured out how the “street car” and bus systems work… even when they don’t…
Amazed with home decoration… how much people love their home
Action plan • PPP and applying in Vietnam: • Move beyond contract relationships: corporate training, teachers to school – on-going at Apollo • Any relationships need to seek to gain benefits for all stake holders: involve all parties – on-going, at home, at work, in community • Be sensible with the most vulnerable stake holders => they can be very powerful or not at all: empower lowest levels – firstly at home and at work
Action plan - Continued • "Leadership from where you sit" • Apply break through innovation tool: • Training for people on the tool - within Nov 2013 • Support people to use tool for the cross-functional projects - by the end of 2013 • More open with risk analysis and risk taking at home, at work and in society • Apply tool for building trust: Dec 2013 • Slowly reduce the use of platic bags at home: upon coming back to VN
Action plan - Continued • Mentoring and coaching people • Continue to mentor 4 mentees at Apollo but with more structures - on-going • Offer to be guest speaker especially to groups of young women - 1st quarter 2014 • Keep contact with people I have been impressed with on this trip to ask for advices on mentoring and coaching – on-going • Organize at least 2 lunches to share learning from this trip: Dec 2013
Action plan - Continued • Long-term Partnership • Support IELP (PSU) - program for Vietnamese group of Project 165 - now and 2014 • Get posters up in PSU and other places about teaching opportunities with Apollo - Done • Build relationship for “Apollo Overseas Centre” to promote PSU: started and on-going • Actively involved in PSU activities in Vietnam especially the coming trip for the US cohorts – Jan 2014
Action plan - Continued • Innovative ideas for education in Vietnam • Involve community in education e.g. internship for Apollo students: Summer 2014 • Teacher training/ development esp. at mass level: share about mentoring system – Quarter 1, 2014 • How to ensure success for an online program: role of content creator and instruction designer: Apply immediately with current projects • Move inductions for staff and teachers online: Quarter 2, 2014
Plan for my host in Vietnam • Meet with Apollo management team • Observe Apollo classes • Observe/ involve in out-of-class activities • Arrange meetings with DOET/ MOET • Arrange seminars for Apollo students and non-Apollo students to introduce IELP and PSU • Discuss ways Apollo can do English placement test for IELP in Vietnam • Arrange meetings with other educational experts in Vietnam • AND show Julie & Samudra Hanoi and the wonderful foods
