  3. History • 1875 – The first time the Melbourne Cup was run on the first Tuesday in November • 1877 - Melbourne Cup became a public holiday for Victorians

  4. The rules • The Melbourne Cup is run over 3,200 metres and is the richest handicap race in the world. • Horses that are three years of age or older • The more successful a horse is, the more weight it will carry. • Jockey’s body weight is less than the handicap weight • Special saddlebag
