People with learning disabilities in England 2012 • Fifth annual digest of statistics about people with learning disabilities and their care • Linked to the learning disability health profiles • - Where possible these provide local version of the data. • Centre for Disability Research produced two editions (2005 and 2008) • This is the third by IHaL (2010, 2011, 2012) People with Learning Disabilities in England 2012

Mortality Median age at death People with LD 57 Other people 81 Sources – death certificate data – people identified as having LD or a condition such as Down’s Syndrome that is usually associated. Median age is the age by which half of deaths have occurred This year also major report by the Confidential Inquiry People with Learning Disabilities in England 2012

Using health services • 10,000 more people were identified as needing an annual health check with their GP • 13,000 more people had an annual health check • For the first time more than 50% of people requiring a health check received a health check • The best 30 areas did health checks for 7 out of 10 people • The worst 30 areas did less than 4 out of every 10 people needing them People with Learning Disabilities in England 2012

Children • In schools, IDENTIFICATION of • Moderate LD is falling (-7% per year), • Severe (+2% per year) and • Profound LD (+ 4.5%)is rising • Wide variation in the proportion of children with LD in mainstream schools: Association with poverty in all groups Free school meals: No SEN 14% MLD 37% SLD 35% PMLD 27% People with Learning Disabilities in England 2012
