  1. The Early Assessment Program Transitioning to New Assessments and Accountability Systems Fall 2013 Nancy Brynelson (North) Carolina C. Cardenas (South)

  2. AB 484 Legislation Creates New California Assessment System–CalMAPP • Ends most CST testing for the Spring 2014 • Grade 11 students may choose to take the English–language arts (ELA) and mathematics CSTs for purposes of the Early Assessment Program (EAP) • Establishes readiness for college-level work in ELA and/or math

  3. Transition in 2014 • CDE will facilitate the administration and cover the administrative costs of the grade 11 CSTs in ELA and mathematics. • As in previous years, tests need to be ordered by December 1, 2013 for spring 2014 administration. • Writing sample will be administered in February and March 2014. • CST portion could be taken later in the year.

  4. Transition in 2014 (cont.) • Scoring and reporting will provide results for individual students only, for purposes of EAP Status. • Students must still grid the “bubble” releasing results to the CSU

  5. Transition in 2014 (cont.) • English Language Arts • EAP consists of the CST for ELA, the 15 additional EAP test items, and the written essay administered in March. • Students must complete all three components (CST and EAP) to receive an EAP status. • Mathematics • EAP consists of the CST in Algebra II, or Summative High School Mathematics, and the 15 additional EAP test items. • Students must complete both components (CST and EAP) to receive an EAP status.

  6. Benefits of EAP participation in 2014 • Students who show readiness on EAP will be exempt from the English Placement Test (EPT) and/or Entry Level Math exam (ELM). • College-ready students are exempt from participating in the CSU Early Start program. • Students will spend less time and money on unnecessary tests and classes. • Students can take advantage of the senior year to become better prepared to succeed in college.

  7. The CSU highly encourages your schools to administer the grade 11 English–language arts and Mathematics CST and EAP in 2014. • Participating in the voluntary CST in 2014 allows students to continue necessary preparation as they transition to their first year of college. • CSU will continue to partner with schools and provide professional learning in English and mathematics • Expository Reading and Writing Courses • Strengthening Mathematics Instruction

  8. Transition in 2015 • EAP • Will utilize the Smarter Balanced summative assessment for EAP determination • Will continue to provide an early signal of college readiness to rising seniors • Will continue to support the productive use of the senior year

  9. Transition in 2015 (cont.) • The CSU plans to use the grade 11 Smarter Balanced summative assessments in math and ELA for purposes of EAP • The CSU plan is to accept the Achievement Level Descriptors which is anticipated to be equivalent to the current EAP statuses: • Ready • Ready Conditional • Not yet demonstrating readiness
