  1. Power, Spectacle & Memory 305MC Analysing media & communication

  2. Summer Task Relevance We visited the ‘Exposed’ Exhibition at the Tate Modern in London. In the exhibition there was a section called ‘Witnessing Violence’. There were some moving images on display of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, as well as the memorial services that are held annually to mark the event.

  3. Tower of light ends 9/11 memorial servicesSun Sep 12 2010 Two massive beams of lights have risen from Lower Manhattan, to illuminate the New York City night sky, commemorating the September 11th attacks. The two shafts of light, known as the "Tribute in Light", are an annual presentation by the Municipal Art Society to honour the victims of the 9/11 attacks and as a tribute to the collapsed Twin Towers that were crashed by airplanes. Memorial services were held around the world for the victims of the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. Muslim extremists hijacked four planes and flew two into the World Trade Centre and a third into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. http://itn.co.uk/135b4ac5dd9e850a43d80c395cd98c86.html

  4. Power A whole country united against a common enemy Sending a strong message of unity and togetherness across the world Everyone can see live coverage of the event The people who are protesting against the building of a mosque near ground zero are using the memorial service as a platform for their protest.

  5. Spectacle Can be seen by the whole state of New York A fitting tribute to the twin towers as the light towers illuminate where the towers once stood The sheer logistics of setting up massive light towers at ground zero, which is now of course a building site for the 9/11 memorial garden and the new freedom tower.

  6. Memory A tribute to the lives lost on 9/11 The whole city holds a minute of silence at 8:46am and 9:03am respectively, marking the times the two planes hit the towers. People will never forget where they were and what they were doing during the tragic events of 9/11
