  3. Words with Prefixes re-, un-, non- • Discuss meanings of the spelling words. • What is the prefix in the following words? • restart • unstuck • nontoxic • These prefixes do not change the spelling of the root word.

Listening Comprehension • Genre – personal narrative • use a first person point of view • tell the author’s personal thoughts and feelings • a true story from an author’s life • Should listen for information about the author’s experiences. • Purpose: To listen for information about what it was like to grow up in the mountains. • Good readers read aloud at the same pace they would use in conversation and do not read too quickly or too slowly for listeners to understand.

  5. What discourages people from settling on mountains? They look mysterious and unreal. Why does the author call the Himalayas “huge monsters”? The rugged terrain makes it hard for people to build homes on them. Isolation means “being alone”, or “being very far away from anything else”.

How does the author feel a bout growing up in the mountains? • The author feels lucky to have lived in such a beautiful place. • How do you think the author’s family got the things they needed in Nepal? • The family members probably brought supplies with them and bought some at the village bazaar. • In this week’s story, you will learn about mountains and how they are formed.

Read page 312 • Cause and effect is one kind of text structure. • A cause is why something happens. • An effect is what happens as a result. • A cause can have more than one effect. • Clue words can signal a cause and effect relationship. • Clue words: because, if, since, when, then, therefore, so that, as a result of, due to

  8. Read page 313 • Think Aloud: Look at the last 2 sentences. The sentence “In time, the climate warmed” tells the cause. The next sentences tells 2 effects: “the ice melted away” and “left deep valleys and lakes in the land.” The clue phrase as a result signals the effects. • Look at sentence 2 in the paragraph and identify the cause and the effect.

Comprehension Strategy: Using a Graphic Organizer • A graphic organizer is a tool for organizing ideas. • There are different kinds of graphic organizers. • Good readers use graphic organizers to help them understand and remember the important points in a text. • When you read nonfiction text, you should first identify the text structure, and then choose the graphic organizer that will best represent the information in the text.

  10. Use a sequence chart to show how mountains change over time. Use a cause and effect diagram or chain to show how weather affects mountain surfaces. Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two mountains. Use a web to record the special features of a mountain.

Develop Concept • Mountains are huge, tall landforms. • Mountains are higher than the land around them. • The tops of mountains are colder than the lower slopes. • Many mountains have snowy peaks. • Mountains are found on every continent. • Mountains come in different shapes and sizes. • Although mountains seem permanent, they slowly change over time.

  22. Concentration Game with Spelling Words • Students in groups of 5 each write 4 spelling words on index cards with the root word on one card and the prefix on another. • Play a concentration game. • Shuffle the cards, place each one facedown, and take turns turning up 2 cards at a time. • If the 2 cards form a spelling word, the student spells the entire word, keeps the cards, and takes another turn. • If not, the cards are placed facedown and turn passes to the next player. • The game ends when all the cards are gone.
