  1. Adding Support

  2. There are 3 types of support you can add to your essay: • 5 Senses • Anecdotes • Concrete Examples

  3. 5 Senses • Hear • the clink of the spoon against my cup • See • the slow change from clear water to swirling amber • Smell • the scent of fresh baked muffins mingles with the burnt smell of coffee and the milder leafy smell of my tea • Taste • the blueberries burst open on your tongue with every bite of muffin • Touch • the warmth of the mug slowly seeping into my fingers on a cold day

  4. My 5 Senses: Original Paragraph To begin with I enjoy the premium loose leaf tea that the barista will brew fresh for me after I place my order. Clearly I love tea, so to me there is nothing better than the smell of a superb mug of tea steaming in front of me. I love when the barista gives me a mini teapot to take to my table so that my cup can be refreshed whenever I want.

  5. My 5 Senses: Edited Paragraph To begin with I enjoy the premium loose leaf tea that the barista will brew fresh for me after I place my order. Clearly I love tea, so to me there is nothing better than the dark, leafy smell of a superb mug of tea steaming in front of me as I watch the slow change of color from clear water to swirling amber. I love when the barista gives me a mini teapot to take to my table so that my cup can be refreshed whenever I want.

  6. Anecdotes • An anecdote is a short story from our life and is used to prove a point. It can be funny, interesting, or factual. • An anecdote is the easiest, most natural, and highest form of support for a personal essay. • Your anecdote should clarify your main idea, not muddle it. • An anecdote is not a long story, it should be told in one or two sentences.

  7. Anecdote Starters • Last Saturday, I… • During the hurricane last year … • I remember when… • In Thursday night’s episode … • When I was in 6th grade… • Just yesterday…

  8. My Anecdotes: Original Paragraph To begin with I enjoy the premium loose leaf tea that the barista will brew fresh for me after I place my order. 9. My Anecdotes: Edited Paragraph To begin with I enjoy the premium loose leaf tea that the barista will brew fresh for me after I place my order. I remember when I first became curious about tea from reading about characters who drank it all the time in England.

  10. My Anecdotes: Edited Paragraph To begin with, I can remember the pleasure I felt when I ordered my first cup of hot tea at All Saints and discovered that the barista brews fresh tea for each customer. I also remember the shock I felt when the barista asked me if I wanted loose leaf or bagged tea, a question that is almost unheard of in today’s world of Starbucks and coffee lovers.

I love when the barista gives me a mini teapot to take to my table so that my cup can be refreshed whenever I want. Just yesterday, I was forced to wait in line for 15 minutes at a Starbucks to get a second cup of hot water for my tea bag.

  14. Concrete Examples • Concrete examples are used when an anecdote is not needed to show a specific time. • Anecdote – Just yesterday, I was forced to wait in line for 15 minutes at a Starbucks to get a second cup of hot water for my tea bag. • Concrete Example – At All Saints, the barista always gives me a mini teapot to take to my table so that my cup can be refreshed whenever I want.
