  2. Question: WHAT IS ? • Note is a short message •Note is an acronym •Note is kind of amorphous

  3. Definition In the workplace or in our daily life,we may find that the person we are looking for is not available,so it is also necessary to leave a message. Notes are used for this purpose. A note is like a short letter with only one or two lines,it is usually handwritten. Its tone may be either formal or informal depending upon the people and the situation. It can be used to express apology, thanks, invitation or to ask for leave.

  4. Formal Note & Informal Note We say that notes that have a fixed, rigid(严谨的) structure are formal, because they are (in a sense) mathematically(精确的) well-described. Notes without a predetermined(固定的) structure are informal. (Formality, in this sense, has nothing to do with fashion or etiquette(礼节,礼仪); a formal note is not wearing a long dress or black tie.)

  5. Example Ⅰ(Formal): September 9 Mr. Black, I have got a bad cold and can not go to school today.I am writing to ask for two-day sick leave(病假). Encl:Doctor’s Certificate of Advice(病假证明) Yours, Betty

  6. Example Ⅱ(Informal): James, I’m awfully sorry that I failed to see your brother off at the airport yesterday afternoon. I didn't know that my watch had stopped. Please forgive me. Edward

  7. Useful Sentences 1.I’d like you to go to the park with me tomorrow. 2.What about going dancing this weekend? 3.Thank you so much for your generous help. 4.I beg to apply for one week’s leave of absence from the 12th to the 21st. 5.Would you please return these books for me when you go to the library?

  8. Tips on Writing • Make sure to include the key elements of a note: the date, the name of the receiver, the writer, and the message. • Write the date only, without the year,or even without the day of the week. • Mention the name directly, usually without the word “Dear”. • Be brief and precise in content.
