  4. Why Else Do We Need English?

Big Ideas of English • When we study English we are studying the making of meaning. • We learn how to make meaning from textsand we study how to communicate meaning to others. • Making meaning has two interconnected purposes: understanding what is in the mind of the author AND THEN extending what we know (of the world and of our ideas). • Making meaning involves three key perspectives: the mind of the author, our mind, and the norms of the culture.

  7. 5 Steps of the Writing Process • Prewriting: thinking about the subject, organizing thoughts before beginning to write. • Drafting: putting ideas down on paper, focus on content not mechanics. • Revising: refining the piece of writing, adding to and reorganizing, getting input from peers or teacher. • Editing: fixing mechanical, grammatical and spelling errors. • Publishing: Writing piece is prepared in final form, sharing writing with others.

  8. Effective Paragraph Writing Unity • Maintain topic throughout the paragraph Topic Sentence • informs the reader of the topic Supporting Statements • Supports your topic sentence • Logical order • Use of transition words between points Concluding Statement • Summarizes your ideas

Formal Literary Paragraph • Topic Sentence: states paragraph topic/argument, no plot details or questions • Supporting Statements: Point, Proof, Comment • Point: Argument to support your topic sentence, establishes the context of the evidence. Proof: indirect or direct quotations, context should be provided for all quotations. Comment: explanation of the evidence. • Concluding Statement: summarizes the content of the paragraph

Activity • In 1 - 2 paragraphs, describe your experience(s) with English. • In one paragraph, summarize the key things you learned last year in Gr. 9 English. • What are your strengths / weaknesses as a learner? • What are your strengths / weaknesses in English? • What are your academic goals for this course? • What do you need to improve as a learner to be successful in your studies this semester?
