  1. When you first get in… • Add LO and DQ to page 121 LO: • Analyze & Cite evidence from primary & secondary sources • Draw conclusions to a historical question DQ: • What conclusions did your group form about reforms in the United States? (explain your examples) Table of Contents Pg. 120Acrostic Poem1/9/14 Pg. 121Reforms1/9/14

  2. Review Vocabulary • Person with second to longest hair Share your own definition & picture for Reform • Person with biggest shoe size Share your own definition & picture for Progress • Person with most pets Share your own definition & picture for Trust • Person who is the oldest Share your own definition & picture for Corruption

  3. Reform • Changes made to something that is wrong or corrupt (Trying to fix something that is bad/not working)

  4. Intro: • Looking back at the era of Industrialization in the US (1870-1900) there was a lot of stuff going on. Factories being built, items being produced at quick rates, people moving to cities, immigration from different countries, big businesses forming– America was expanding! But, there were many effects of these changes in the United States– some good and some bad. As industry & manufacturing become the norm, will the United States need to make changes or keep things as they are?

  5. 1st Step: Historical Question • Following the Industrialization era (1870-1900), are reforms needed in the United States?

  6. Pick Jobs • Facilitator: Decides on a plan to tackle task & makes sure everyone participates • Recorder: Everyone is recording  • Tracker: Makes sure everyone understands directions & keeps group on track with time • Reporter: Will share conclusions with class

  7. 2nd Step: Research • There are 15 sources provided to you (most primary, some secondary) • You must use 11 of the 15 sources • Look through the documents and record evidence of things that need reforms or areas that are not in need of reforms • Each piece of evidence must end will a citation (ex. Doc A or A)

  8. 3rd Step: Hypothesis or Claim • Now you and your group must look at the evidence & decide if your group thinks reforms are needed in the United States or not. • Our group thinks reforms are needed in the United States. • Out group thinks reforms are not needed in the United States.

  9. Step #5: Evidence Evidence: • Document ___: describe the document • Document ___: describe the document • Document ___: describe the document • Do not explain the evidence yet, just present your findings • You cannot use evidence from the same documents • Your evidence should be the 3 STRONGEST that your group found to support your claim • Try to use different types of evidence • Photograph • Political cartoon • Graph/chart • Quotations/readings

  10. 6th Step: Reasoning • Reasoning: (How does the evidence you chose, show that reforms are needed/not needed in the united states) • Make sure to relate it back to your claim • Example: • Claim: Reforms are not needed in the United States • Evidence: Document G shows that more miles of railroad tracks were being built each decade. • Reasoning: Document G supports my claim because if railroads are being built, there are more jobs for people to make money & America can continue to become more powerful.

  11. Example from Last Investigation • Claim -Our group thinks the North had the advantage in the Civil War. • Evidence (Just Facts) -Doc A shows the North had 80% of factories -Doc B shows the North had more horses than the South -Doc F shows the North had a trained General, Ulysses S. Grant • Reasoning (Explain why that fact supports your claim) -Document A supports our claim because if the North had more factories, they could produce more ammo and weapons for war. -Document B supports our claim because if the North had more horses, they could travel faster on the battlefield. -Document F supports our claim because if the North had a trained general, he can better command the troops on the battlefield.

  12. If Absent… • You will complete another ISN scavenger hunt about industrialization. If you cannot find the answers in your ISN, you can look them up online or in a textbook

  13. Acrostic Poem • Used to describe a person, place, feeling, or event A- Always put together M- My fabulous sister Y- Younger than me

  14. Reflection Activity- Left Side • Acrostic Poem: Describe what was going on in America following the Industrialization era by completing the acrostic poem. Your descriptions should be based off what we learned today & paint a picture of what was going on in America during that time! A M E R I C A
