What is a Scholarship? schol·ar·ship [skol-er-ship] - noun a sum of money or other aid granted to a student, because of merit, need, etc., to pursue studies or further their education Scholarships are generally awarded based on a range of criteria which usually reflect the values and purposes of the organization, donor, or founder of the award

    3. Why Do We Have $cholarship$? FEW believes that education is just one of the ways for members to succeed in their careers By offering financial assistance programs like scholarships, FEW re-invests in its members With industry and government competing for individuals with education and technical skills, it is imperative that we train the future workforce now!

    4. How Does FEW Fund $cholarship$? Funding can come from individual donations, sponsorships, or targeted fundraising events When sponsors are recruited, FEW lets the sponsor know that the education and training they are supporting will: assist women in meeting their educational goals and career advancement in Federal service help train the future workforce, as thousands of current Federal employees prepare for retirement FEW relies on income from a variety of sources to fund scholarships.FEW relies on income from a variety of sources to fund scholarships.

    5. Why Members Should Apply for $cholarship$? Scholarship programs available to members offer many advantages: Help fund or offset the personal financial investment members put into education Solidify FEW as an organization that truly believes practicing what it preaches by working actively through its scholarship programs to end discrimination and help advance career opportunities for women in Federal service Awarding scholarships to members speaks volumes to agencies and gives FEW credibility as a professional organization The government isn’t always the first source of training income for employees to gain needed knowledge and skills to move ahead.The government isn’t always the first source of training income for employees to gain needed knowledge and skills to move ahead.

FEW Components that offer $cholarship$ Federally Employed Women www.few.org FEW is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1968 after the issuance of Executive Order 11375 that added “sex” to the prohibited discrimination laws within the Federal government. FEW works to end sex discrimination and supports the advancement of women in Federal service by: encouraging diversity and equity in the workplace enhancing career opportunities establishing and maintaining relationships with organizations to advocate the fair application of laws, policies, procedures, and practices improving the quality of life for women by influencing legislative actions committing to maintain a unified and diverse membership providing opportunities for professional growth

FEW Foundation for Education and Training The FEW Foundation www.fewfoundation.org The FEW Foundation for Education and Training (FEW Foundation) is a tax-exempt charity focused on promoting and assisting women in the Federal government to achieve additional training to support their job aspirations Established in 2004, the FEW Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable arm of Federally Employed Women (FEW), a national organization founded in 1968 with four focus areas: Diversity, Training, Legislation, and Compliance FEW Foundation for Education and Training mission is to: help women enhance their career opportunities through education and training encourage diversity and equity in the workplace provide opportunities for professional growth through leadership development, education, mentoring, and networking FEW Foundation provides academic scholarships to members and immediate family (spouses/dependent children) and information/assistance to others through regularly scheduled webinars, participation in career/education fairs, and other outreach efforts

    8. Rocky Mountain Region The Rocky Mountain Region covers the states of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota At the present time, the Region is does not have an active scholarship program

    9. Denver Federal Center Chapter The Denver Federal Center Chapter is currently developing a scholarship program. Member benefits were made possible by the outstanding fundraising effort at the 2008 Holiday Party. The Chapter Executive Committee will be announcing its criteria this year.

RTP The FEW Foundation www.fewfoundation.org The Board of Trustees voted to award at least one Scholarship to each of FEW's Regions for a member who might not otherwise be able to attend a Regional Training Program (RTP).  Foundation RTP Scholarship will be administered is through the use of existing Regional Scholarship programs that currently existence in each Region Once the Regional Scholarship Committee selects a recipient using its own Regional criteria, the Foundation is notified and a check will be issued to the Region for the just the tuition portion of the RTP (no travel or other expenses are included in this scholarship) The Rocky Mountain Region www.rmfew.org At present the Rocky Mountain Region does not have an active internal RTP Scholarship Program, but that may change soon! The DFC Chapter www.rmfew.org/dfc.asp The Denver Federal Center Chapter is currently developing a scholarship program. This member benefit was made possible by the outstanding fundraising effort at the 2008 Holiday Party. The Chapter Executive Committee will be announcing the criteria this year.

NTP Policy FEW will recognize through annual scholarship programs individuals who best exemplify the group to which the organization's training is directed One program will award scholarships to FEW members, with competition being across the entire membership The other program will award a scholarship to a retiree(s) who has been a FEW member at least five years before retirement, and has maintained continuous membership The number of scholarships to be awarded each year will be in accordance with what has been approved within the national budget for that year Complete details and forms are available in the National Policy and Procedures Manual, which can be found on FEW’s website in the Member’s Only Section, Forms & Documents

How the Process Works (FEW NTP Scholarship continued) Complete application, include attachments and mail to Scholarship Committee or file online on or before April 7th (online filing is new this year!) Packages are reviewed by a Committee Committee recommendations are presented to FEW’s National Executive Committee at their Spring meeting Winner notified by phone following meeting Financing arrangements worked out between recipient and FEW National Treasurer

Employed Member Requirements (FEW NTP Scholarship continued) Be a member of FEW in good standing and demonstrate active participation with FEW for one or more years Must not have been a scholarship recipient in the past three years Submit and postmark application package by April 7th, or file online on or before the due date

    15. Retired Member Requirements (FEW NTP Scholarship continued) Been an active member of FEW for at least five years prior to retirement and having maintained continuous membership since retirement Must not have been a scholarship recipient in the past three years Submit and postmark application package by April 7th or file online on or before the due date

    16. National FEW Collegiate $cholarship$ Policy FEW will present annual collegiate $cholarship$ to individuals seeking their first undergraduate degree or graduate studies This program will award $cholarship$ to deserving members in good standing The number and value of $cholarship$ to be awarded will be determined each year based on the approved budget $cholarship$ will be awarded first to FEW members and then to immediate family members pursuing a higher education

Family Requirements (FEW Collegiate continued) Must be the child or grandchild of an active FEW member Must be a high school senior or attending an accredited two- or four-year university to apply and be seeking their first under graduate degree Attach a certified copy of their high school or college transcript Must not have been a scholarship recipient in the past three years

    20. Consideration Factors FEW Members (FEW Collegiate continued) Be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited 2 or 4-year college/university Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 Be pursuing your first undergraduate degree or graduate studies Submit a copy of all recorded grades or college transcripts (if currently attending college) Complete and Submit the Scholarship Application Form Include an essay on the topic “Why I Should be Awarded a FEW Collegiate Scholarship.” (no longer than two double-spaced pages) Submit three letters of recommendation preferably from a Chapter President, Regional Manager, Community Leader and/or Supervisor. Support the goals of FEW and the Federal Women's Program Document FEW experience/activities Must not have been a scholarship recipient in the past three years

    21. Consideration Factors FEW Family Members (FEW Collegiate continued) Be in good academic standing with current high school with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher Provide at least three letters of recommendation from high school principal, high school teacher, guidance counselor, college professor, or community leader of which individual is actively involved in a program that assists others Write a one-page essay which contains the following: How receiving this scholarship will make a difference in your life Citing a woman in your life who has inspired or encouraged you and the difference she made on you Provide documentation of application or acceptance to a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university. Complete and submit the Scholarship Application Form

FEW Foundation Collegiate The FEW Foundation is accepting applications for one full four year-scholarship in any career field offered at Grantham University, a 100% online university The scholarship includes all books and software for the completely online academic program Visit the Grantham University web site at www.grantham.edu/few.htm for more information

How the Process Works (Foundation Collegiate Scholarship continued) Complete application, include attachments and mail to Scholarship Committee by May 31, 2009 Packages are reviewed by the committee and approved by the Foundation Board A selection is made and the winner notified by July 1, 2009

Application Criteria (Foundation Collegiate Scholarship continued) Be a member of FEW in good standing and demonstrate your participation with FEW for one or more years or be an immediate family member (spouse or dependent child) of same Complete an essay on the topic “Why I Should be Awarded a FEW Foundation Scholarship.” The essay should: be no longer than two double-spaced pages; speak to your goals your commitment to FEW (e.g., serve as an officer or on a committee) your interest in a field of study within the career field of your choice how it will help you grow in your career as well as your financial need

    25. Application Criteria (Foundation Collegiate Scholarship continued) Submit three letters of recommendation, from a Chapter President, Regional Manager, Community Leader, and/or Supervisor. For FEW members, Chapter President/Regional Manager letter of recommendation is required Have had a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in college/high school. Must maintain 3.0 GPA Submit copies of all recorded grades, high school or college transcript Meet Grantham University’s academic and admissions policies Mail one copy of application form and other documentation to each member of the Scholarship Committee
