Book Five: Lesson Eight

Olympics Old and New

  • Why do the athletes have to run 26 miles in an Olympic marathon? Marathon used to be a small town. It was located 26 miles away from Athens, Greece. In the past, people communicated not by telephone but by human beings. That is, they had to send messengers to exchange news. In the 5th century B.C., Persia intended to invade Greece. The Persians started first by occupying Marathon.

  • Unfortunately, the number of the Athenian warriors in the town was not enough, so they sent messengers to other cities to ask for help. Later the Athenians won the battle. Again they had to send messengers to announce the victory. One of the men, named Phidippides, ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens. As soon as he arrived in Athens and presented the good news, he died on the spot. In order to memorize the man, modern athletes still run 26 miles to finish the modern Olympic marathon. It usually takes them about two hours.
