  6. Reading Harcourt Reading Series… • Reading stories are grouped thematically into clusters or anthologies • Typically one story is covered per week • Vocabulary words are given weekly • Instruction occurs in large group settings and small ability groups

  7. Reading • One decoding and comprehension skill is covered weekly • Students practice the weekly skills through various reading activities Check out the wikipagefor specific skills covered!

  8. Daily Five • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Listen to Reading • Word Work • Work on Writing • Please have your second grader read or be read to at least four nights per week.

  9. Comprehension Strategies • Main Idea • Sequencing • Narrative Elements • Make Inferences • Visualizing • Make and Confirm Predictions • Make Connections • Summarize • Questioning

  10. Choosing Just Right Books • Five Finger Rule Five unknown words on a page, book tends to be too difficult • Comprehension is the key Child needs to understand the meaning of text

  11. Authors Workshop • Writing process taught in a workshop environment • Students are monitored and work at their own pace • Books are created • Grammar and craft lessons occur daily Parent Volunteers are Guest Editors!

  12. Spelling • Preview every Monday • Every Thursday night, practice test for homework • Tests given Friday, returned that afternoon or Monday. Challengewords are available weekly.

  13. Math • First few chapters provide review as a foundation for curriculum • Challenge work always available • *Progress checks are unannounced Chapters include… • Addition and Subtraction • Time Money • Measurement • Regrouping • Graphing • Geometry • Fractions • Multiplication and Division

  14. Math • Timed tests will be a part of second grade. They consist of addition facts and subtraction facts tested together. • Reinforce at home • Read weekly newsletters for practice tips

  18. Homework Sometimes corrections will be sent home. • Homework will be sent home in homework folders Monday through Thursday • One or two pages per night

  19. Homework • When children forget their homework, they can complete it at second recess or take it home the next night. • Writing assignments can have errors. Math homework should be without mistakes. • Homework should not take more than 20 minutes per night.
