    1. In the Wake of the Apostle: The Deutero-Pauline and Pastoral Epistles The New Testament Bart D. Ehrman Chapter 24

    2. What to Expect Is it possible that any forged writings made it into the New Testament? Scholars are sure that some of Paul’s New Testament letters are pseudonymous: The three Deutero-Pauline letters The three Pastoral epistles The chapter discusses their major themes and why scholars believe they were written long after Paul’s death

    3. Pseudonymity in the Ancient World Pseudonymous writings (forgeries) are those that claim to be written by someone famous There were a number of reasons: economic profit, humility, or to bolster the authority of the writing Ancient authors almost universally condemned the practice

    4. The Deutero-Pauline Epistles The sense of when the end will come in 2 Thessalonians does not sound Pauline The writing style and theology of Colossians, especially the resurrection of believers, is different from Paul’s Ephesians deals with the relationship of Jew and Gentile, but the vocabulary, writing style, and theology appear different from Paul’s

    5. The Deutero-Pauline Epistles Critical scholars debate whether or not Paul wrote these books They may have been written by three different authors near the end of the first century

    6. The Pastoral Epistles The letters 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus principally address False teachers who have created problems, possibly tied in some way to Gnostics Internal communities’ issues, such as women playing roles in the church They are ostensibly written by Paul to Timothy and Titus, both younger pastors

    7. The Historical Situation and Authorship of the Pastoral Epistles Most critical scholars think that Paul did not write them, based on vocabulary that is different from Paul’s, and the historical situation they presuppose They were evidently written by the same author, near the end of the first century, who tried to deal with the problems of his day by claiming the authority of Paul

    8. Conclusion: The Post-Pauline Pastoral Epistles The vocabulary and concerns of the Pastoral Epistles reflect Christianity at least a generation after Paul’s death The church that the apostle Paul left behind was a church that had developed in complex ways and needed to strengthen itself, using Paul’s name as authority
