  7. Giving it a whirl

  8. Giving it a whirl ♦ The birds are an image of the dervish, utterly dependent on God and expressing their joy in God through flight. This kind of metaphorical play is very much in the style of the Sufi poet Rumi, the originator of the Mevlana order. ♦ Up above this whirling was a painted dome. The dome was finished somewhere around 1850. It represents the sun at the apex, which could be taken for a symbol of the oneness and life-giving power of God. In the white area around the sun are what at first seem to be a lot of black specks, but on closer examination these are actually flying birds.

  9. Giving it a whirl The sufi dance is practiced by the Dervishes, through a weird whirling dance, a ceremony that aims to reach perfection as they say and the origin of the dance goes back to 12th century. A traditional belly dancing has been part of Egyptian culture that is performed only by men. The dancer keep on spinning from start to the end of the dance which lasted for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The ritual goes through different levers, first step is an Islamic prayer and then they start to whirl, slowly till they go faster and reach some kind of an ecstatic trance. It was really interesting and not touristic at all.
