Background of the Problem • An alternative form of education in which parents provide education to their kids at home rather than enrolling them in a traditional school. • Historically it was a the only way to provide education, however after the implementation of compulsory education law, the institution of homeschooling deteriorated. • Since 1960’s there have been a tremendous increase in home schooling student population. There are about 1.5 million homeschooling students in the United States.

Background of the Problem • According to Minnesota state law, it is parent’s responsibility to provide necessary knowledge and skills to their children so that they could act as an effective citizen. • There are about 137 students enrolled for homeschooling for the year of 2011-2012. • Homeschooling cost a lot of money and a lot of time and energy f parents. So why people homeschool their children?

Purpose Statement & Questions • The purpose of this research is to explore the reasons why parents in a highly regarded school district in Minnesota choose to homeschool. • Questions • Why do parents in Mankato homeschool their children? • What is their vision of education? • What do they think of public education provided in their local school district?

  5. Significance • The size of homeschooling population makes this an important research, as it is more than the student population enrolled in charter and voucher programs. • In-depth knowledge of homeschooling parents’ perspectives • Information will be useful to understand the conditions of public schools • Research may provide curriculum developers information that might help them to better understand how to design lessons to meet the individual needs of various students • Addition to the current research. Especially researchers who are interested in the unschooling or child-centered educational approach.
