  3. GAME TIME! Are these actions types of citizenship? If you answer “Yes”- stand up “No”- stay seated

  4. “Yes”- Stand Up “No”- Stay Seated • Voting in an election • Being a vegetarian • Raking leaves for an elderly neighbor • Giving money to charity • Picking up trash on campus • Joining the Humane Society club • Staying "up-to-date" on current events • Not shopping at Wal-Mart because you disagree with their business practices

  5. “Yes”- Stand Up “No”- Stay Seated • Leaving a comment on an online political blog • Being a public school teacher • Participating in a class walk out to protest large class sizes • Buying brownies at a bake sale from a student group outside the student union • Attending a game to support the team • Sharing a news story with friends on Facebook

  6. Citizenship Definition “Citizenship centers on active community participation as a result of a sense of responsibility to the communities in which people live.” The value of caring about others

History of U.S. Citizenship • 1830s - French historian noted “...the extent to which Americans worked together to solve their common problems.” • Creating hospitals, schools, places of worship, community theatres, musical groups • Diversity in America combines cultures that have backgrounds in working together

Citizenship “Process” • Get Involved in Communities by: • Direct service • Community research • Advocacy and education • Capacity building • Political involvement • Socially responsible • Philanthropic giving • Participation in associations Much of downtown Grand Rapids' resurgence can be credited to philanthropic investments.

  10. Citizenship “Process” cont. • Ways to Make Involvement More Effective: • Understanding social capital • Awareness of issues and community history • Empowerment • Empathy • Multicultural citizenship • Understanding community development • Ability to build coalitions

Effective Involvement • Social Capital • Social Capital: citizens who work together, socialize; people who know and trust one another • Bonding: groups with similar interests • Bridging: social networks among more diverse people • Issues and Community History • Keep informed • Work together • Learn from the past

  12. Effective Involvement (cont.) • Empowerment • Understanding why people care about causes • Difference in passions • Empathy • “Enlarged mentality” • Understanding perspectives • Multicultural Citizenship • Diversity is necessary for effective citizenship

Effective Involvement (cont.) • Community Development • Understand average community development • Pseudocommunity: False sense of getting along • Chaos: tension, struggle • Organization: overcome chaos • Community: allow various opinions • Coalitions • Groups join resources for common goal • Most problems are too big to handle by ourselves

  14. Questions To Consider: • Who gets to participate • To whom the community belongs • Whom the community benefits • Who defines the boundaries of the community • Who makes the decisions in how the community develops • How the community redevelops when issue appears

Modern View on Citizenship • Global Citizenship • Human Rights, Pollution, Economy • Consumer Activism • Boycotting - opting out of certain purchases • Buycotting- buying certain products where the company shares common values as consumer • Use of Technology • Shift focus easily, greater audience

  17. Connections to the Other Cs • Citizenship: • Requires people to clarify values through Consciousness of Self • Examine if choices are Congruent with their beliefs • Practice Collaborating with others • Reach a Common Purpose with others • Teaches working through Controversy and Civility
