  1. How does Fertilizer Affect the Growth of Algae Nicole and Raquel

  2. How does Fertilizer Affect the Growth of Algae Introduction Hypothesis If more fertilizer is added, then the algae growth will increase. • In this activity you will see how four different amounts of fertilizers can affect the growth of algae.

  3. Materials How does Fertilizer Affect the Growth of Algae • 5 Gatorade bottles • Fertilizer • Algae • Sharpie • Tap water

  4. Set-up of Four Water Bottles Procedure • Control- Tap water only • Bottle #1- Algae with No Fertilizer • Bottle #2- Algae with 30 mL of Vigoro. • Bottle #3 – Algae with 60 mL of Vigoro. • Bottle #4- Algae with 90 mL of Vigoro.

  5. Observation 8/05/13 8/8/13 8/12/13 8/15/13 8/20/13

  6. Conclusion • 1: Which bottle had the most algae growth? What was the absorbance change over the time? • The bottle that had the most algae growth was bottle #4 on 8/12/13. Over time the algae was getting bigger and bigger but at the end of the experiment it seemed to have gotten smaller and the water got harder to see through. • 2: Which bottle had the least algae growth? What was the absorbance change over time? • The bottle that had the least amount of algae growth was bottle #1 on 8/5/13. Over time the algae remained the same, but the water kept getting darker. • 3: Did the amount of fertilizer affect the growth of the algae based on the experiment? • Yes, the amount of fertilizer affected the growth of algae because the more fertilizer there was the more affect was given towards the growth of algae. • 4: Was your hypothesis supported or not? • Yes, the hypothesis was supported because the more fertilization there was the more growth.

  7. Conclusion Cont. • 1. How can the growth of algae in the river be prevented? • Don’t fertilize your lawn, because all the fertilizer can and will wash down to the river. • Use Native New England plants, because the don’t require as much care as other plants do. Sense they are adapted to all 4 seasons. • 2. If there’s a lot of algae in the river. What would happen to the oxygen level and the aquatic life? • The oxygen level will decrease because the algae will take over the oxygen and obviously the aquatic life needs oxygen in order to survive so many more animals will die.
