The Mean. The Mean is obtained by dividing the sum of all the data by the number of data. (i.e. the total of all the items divided by the number of items). The mean is the total of all the items divided by the number of items.

  1. TheMean The Mean is obtained by dividing the sum of all the data by the number of data. (i.e. the total of all the items divided by the number of items)

  2. The mean is the total of all the items divided by the number of items. e.g. The ages of six children are 5, 3, 7, 6, and 2. What is the mean age? 5 + 3 + 1 + 7 + 6 + 2 = 24 24 ÷ 6 = 4 The mean is 4 The mean will not always be a whole number, and will often not even be a possible value. E.g the mean number of children per family in the UK used to be 2.4, but this is not an actual possibility.

  3. The attendances at an art exhibition on six successive days were: 130, 97, 110, 78, 64 and 150 What was the mean daily attendance? 104.8 130 + 97 + 110 + 78 + 64 + 150 = 629 629  6 = 104.8 (to 1 d.p.)

  4. A canteen’s food bills for one week were: £498, £529, £384, £366, £620, £591, £485 What was the mean cost per day? The number of employees served on each day was: 109, 110, 84, 88, 122, 14, 82 What was the average cost per head? £496.14 £498 + £529 + £384 + £366 + £620 + £591 + £485 = £3473 £3473  7 = £496.14 (to 2 d.p.)

The number of employees served on each day was: 109, 110, 84, 88, 122, 14, 82 What was the average cost per head? £496.14 £5.70 109 + 110 + 84 + 88 + 122 + 14 + 82 = 609 609  7 = 87 £496.14  87 = £5.70 (to 2 d.p.)

  6. Five men have a mean height of 181 cm. Three women have a mean height of 169 cm. What is the mean height of the eight people? 176.5 cm The 5 men: 5 x 181 = 905 The 4 women: 3 x 169 = 507 905 + 507 = 1412 1412  8 = 176.5
