  1. Electronic News Gathering

  2. What is ENG? • It is the process of reporting events and activities that occur outside of the television studio. • It is “getting the story” and presenting this information to the viewer.

  3. Rule of Threes • This rule states that the audio and video segments should be grouped in threes changing the format or style of the segments after every three sentences: • three sentences of reporter standup • three sentences of reporter narration over footage • two or three sentences of interviews or comments by guests • three sentences of reporter standup summary

  4. Sound Bites • These are small segments (two to five seconds) of video and audio clips that remain intact and inserted in the project. • Different from B-Roll in that it is footage from the actual event.

  5. Lead-In • Two or three sentences that enable the viewer to quickly grasp the content of the report. • Essential for informing the viewing audience about the topic

  6. Stand-Up • On-camera shot of a reporter as he or she presents information about the topic.

  7. Tag • Identifies the reporter (by name) and station affiliation. This is Scott Smith for LCTV. For LCTV, this is Scott Smith. Reporting for LCTV, this has been Scott Smith. • We need a standard sign-off.

  8. Talking Heads • Bust shots of people giving comments and opinions about the event or activity. • The reporter is not seen on camera, and sometimes the question is not heard, but only the guest’s responses. • Always use titles to identify the person.
