  1. Mr. AltorferLife Science The Parts of the Compound Light Microscope

  2. The Compound Light Microscope • Simple Microscopes- Microscopes with only one lens. • Example: Magnifying Glass, Glasses http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=4b7b0c5c-07cd-4b5a-b196-c8ffd4dcb099

  3. The Compound Light Microscope • Compound Light Microscope- A microscope that uses two or more lenses to magnify an object. • Examples: http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=4b7b0c5c-07cd-4b5a-b196-c8ffd4dcb099http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=4b7b0c5c-07cd-4b5a-b196-c8ffd4dcb099

  4. Body Tube

  5. The Compound Light Microscope • Body Tube- The part of the microscope that you look through with your eye.

  6. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece

  7. The Compound Light Microscope • Revolving Nose Piece- Allows the objective lenses to be rotated into position.

  8. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens

  9. The Compound Light Microscope • Scanning Lens- The smallest of the three objective lenses. Allows the user to see a very big picture. • Very little detail is seen with this lens. • Always use this lens first! • Magnification level- 4X

  10. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens

  11. The Compound Light Microscope • Low Power Lens- Use this lens to see greater detail in a specimen. • Use this lens second! • Magnification level: 10X

  12. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power lens

  13. The Compound Light Microscope • High Power Lens- The lens with the highest magnification level. This lens provides the highest level of detail. • Use this lens last! • Magnification Level- 40X

  14. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Clips

  15. The Compound Light Microscope • Stage Clips- Use these to hold the slide in place.

  16. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Clips Diaphragm

  17. The Compound Light Microscope • Diaphragm- Use this to control the amount of light that passes through the specimen.

  18. Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Clips Diaphragm Light Source

  19. The Compound Light Microscope • Light Source- Illuminates the object being viewed.

  20. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Clips Diaphragm Light Source

  21. The Compound Light Microscope Eye Piece-The part of the microscope that you view the specimen through. Magnification Power- 10X

  22. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Arm Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Clips Diaphragm Light Source

  23. The Compound Light Microscope • Arm- The part of the microscope that supports the revolving nose piece. • Use the arm to carry the microscope.

  24. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Arm Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Stage Clips Diaphragm Light Source

  25. The Compound Light Microscope • Stage- The glass slide is placed on the stage. Keep the stage clean and dry.

  26. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Arm Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Coarse Adjustment Stage Clips Diaphragm Light Source

  27. The Compound Light Microscope • Coarse Adjustment- Use this knob to focus the microscope under scanning and low power. • NEVER use this knob under high power.

  28. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Arm Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Coarse Adjustment Stage Clips Fine Adjustment Diaphragm Light Source

  29. The Compound Light Microscope • Fine Adjustment Knob- Use this knob to focus the microscope under any power. • This knob sharpens the image you are viewing.

  30. Eye Piece Body Tube Revolving Nose piece Arm Scanning Lens Low Power Lens High Power Lens Stage Coarse Adjustment Stage Clips Fine Adjustment Diaphragm Light Source Base

  31. The Compound Light Microscope • Base- Supports the microscope. Always keep the base flat on the table. • Never tilt the microscope.

  32. Determining the Magnification of your Microscope- • To determine the magnification of your microscope: Power of the eye piece- 10x Power of the scanner 4 x objective lens- Multiply them together-40x is the total magnification!

  33. Determining the Magnification of your Microscope- • Low Power Objective- 10x Eye Piece- 10x Total Magnification - 100x

  34. Determining the Magnification of your Microscope- • High Power Objective- 40x Eye Piece- 10x Total Magnification- 400x
