Healthy People in Healthy Environments What do we do? • Change behavior (inspire, train, educate) • Help - provide technical assistance, health consultation, manage risk • Issue permits to construct, operate or work • Inspect to assure compliance • Investigate disease outbreaks • Involve those we regulate (Adv Comm, meetings) • Enforce the laws and regulations

  3. Healthy People in Healthy Environments What do we do? • 8,760 hours of monitoring • 111 permits issued • 111 emission inventories • 319 inspections • 2 major enforcement actions • 1 Environmental Award given

  4. The air and us… • Our lungs inhale over 2,000 gallons of air per day. • We take about 23,000 breaths per day. • The surface area inside our lungs is about the same as a tennis court.

  5. The air and us… • Our lungs are the only internal organs that are directly exposed to the environment. • A person can live without: • food for about 30 days, • water for about 3 days, • air about 3 minutes !

Health Effects of Air Pollution Ozone • Breathing difficulty • Asthma exacerbation • Reduced lung function • Coughing, nose and throat irritation • Chest pain • Increased risk of respiratory illness • Particulate Matter (PM2.5) • Heart attack • Angina • Asthma exacerbation • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease aggravation • Reduced lung function • Missed work and school

  9. How do we know how if our air is safe? We monitor for Ozone, CO, & PM. NAAQS National Ambient Air Quality Standards

  10. EPA’s Air Quality Index • A simple tool that measures the overall quality of air • Moderate and below = within NAAQS • Overall, Lincoln has good air quality • Rated in top 20 on Ozone • Particulate matter remains a concern
