  2. Sayings about women in history • For most of history, anonymous was a woman. (Virginia Woolf) • Women are the only exploited group in history to have been idealized into powerlessness.   3. The word “woman” • < late O.E. wimman (pl. wimmen), lit. "woman-man," alteration of wifman (pl. wifmen), a compound of wif "woman" + man "human being" (in O.E. used in ref. to both sexes).

  4. The Biblical story (Genesis) • And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. • So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. • And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. • And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; • And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. • And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. • Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

  7. The traditional roles of women(stereotype) • Domestic: women’s place is in the home • As housewives: Cooking, taking care of her family. • As maids, governess, teachers

  8. Feminism • There is a belief that women and men are, and have been, treated differently by our society, and that women have frequently and systematically been unable to participate fully in all social arenas and institutions. • And there is a desire to change that situation. • That this gives a "new" point-of-view on society, when eliminating old assumptions about why things are the way they are, and looking at it from the perspective that women are not inferior and men are not "the norm."

  9. Feminism is an ideology focusing on the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. • It comprises a number of social, cultural and political movements and theories. • A person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism is called a feminist.

Women in sports • Women’s participation in sports is growing rapidly. • The days when people thought it wasn’t feminine are gone. • Girls can get just as much benefit out of sports as boys can: • Building physical endurance and coordination skills, perseverance, teamwork, leadership skills, etc.

  13. Women in media • It is common for the media to portray men and women in stereotyped ways. • This problem is serious for feminists, for media have a tremendous influence on average people. • Women are still been portrayed as housewives or sex objects. • There have been changes, however, as feminists work to overcome this stereotyping.
