5 th Bad Design Competition

Join the 5th Bad Design Competition hosted by HFES Penn State Chapter focusing on User Interface Design. Students can submit poorly designed interfaces with potential redesign ideas. Prizes awarded for funniest, most bizarre, best overall description, best redesign, and grand prize. Evaluation based on Jacob Nielsen's 10 Usability Heuristics. Submission deadline is March 22nd, with the award ceremony on April 1st.

  1. 5th Bad Design Competition Hosted by HFES Penn State Chapter (Human Factors & Ergonomics Society)

  2. Theme of this year – Interface Design • User interface • Input, allowing the users to manipulate a system • Output, allowing the system to indicate the effects of the users' manipulation

  3. Rules • All students are eligible • Written description of why the design is bad with potential redesign ideas (at least 250 words) with your name and email address • Only individual submissions (no groups) • Multiple submissions allowed per individual

  4. Prizes Funniest/ Most Bizarre Best Overall Description Best Redesign Grand Prize

  6. Evaluation • How well you understand and explain the problems? • How good is your redesign? • How significant is your improvement to the users? You submission will be evaluated by 3 HFES officersbased on a scale of 1-7 for each aspect.

  7. Dates • Submission Deadline: March 22nd • Award Ceremony: April 1st
