PARTNERSHIP The Project is a partnership between Government (Represented by the Department of Correctional Services) and the Private Sector (the Contracting Entity) • Contract negotiations started 1997 • Negotiations completed and contract signed 16th August 2000 • Building commenced immediately • Facility opened 16 February 2002 (18 months later) • Facility has operated at full capacity since August 2002 • Facility awarded ISO 9001 certification August 2003 • No cost variations from the originalproject

General Offender Information • Longest Sentence • 27 x life plus 1 127 Years imprisonment • Shortest Sentence • 12 Years imprisonment • Oldest Offender • 88 Years Old serving 15 Years • Youngest Offender • 23 Years old • Official Visits • First six months of 2009: 253 Offenders received 148 visitors (Lawyers, Social Workers, SAPS) • Social Visits • First six months of 2009: 3 562 Offenders received social visits from 5488 adult visitors and 638 children

Health Service • Facilities • 50 bed hospital, dentistry, X-ray facilities and emergency room • Medical activities • 25% of offenders on medication • Nursing encounters 30,000 per month • Medical officer encounters 760 per month • HIV treatment - death due to natural causes reduced by from 29 per annum to an average of 11 • Currently 28 offenders on TB treatment • Average patients in hospital 8 • Staff: 2 Doctors, 24 Nurses, Dentist, Pharmacist “The department wants to congratulate you on the high standard of nursing and health care” Senior General Manager Health Services Limpopo Province Dept. of Health and Welfare

Food Services • 6.6m meals per annum prepared on site • One-third hot meals • All meals delivered on time • 50% of meals are special diets including High Protein, Salt Free, Halaal etc (16 variations) • Special diet meals are delivered to specific offenders in specific locations with specific wrapping • 100+ offenders trained and qualified as food handlers (3,864 hours training provided) • 17 staff members supervise operations • Samples of each meal are kept for 4 days • In the event of a power failure or emergency, food can be provided for 4 days with emergency supplies

Community Involvement • Donation of surplus equipment to various bodies • Charity Golf events to sponsor local children’s home • Sports activities e.g. Magau Village Volleyball, 2010 Soccer World Cup launch • Participation in local events, marathons, local shows • Joint training with local municipality • Minimum of 10 Family Days per annum • Community leaders invited to visit the facility • Emergency drills (including mass evacuation) and coordination meetings conducted with: • SA Police Services • Fire Brigade • Ambulance Service • Defense Force
